But isn’t free-to-play supposed to mean the death of retail?
As recently as a year ago that’s what we were being told. But GAME’s announcement of a new free-to-play platform is further evidence that retail might just find a role to play in this brave new world of digital gaming.
The service launches with three EA titles including Need for Speed World, Command& Conquer Tiberium Alliances and Lord of Ultima. Battlefield Play4Free and Battlefield Heroes are ‘coming soon’.
It’s not known if other publishers are due to be coming on board, although more titles are most certainly on the way.
“Launching our initial free-to-play offering in partnership with EA is a significant step forward for us at GAME,” a spokesperson stated. “We’re always looking to bring new ways of gaming to the UK’s gaming communities and we are working hard to make sure we can deliver in every digital arena – free-to-play is just the start.”

Fewer video games were sold than ever last week, as the release schedule dries up.
Retailers shifted just 332,338 games over the last seven days, generating £8m in revenue. But the worse is still to come, say analysts.
In fact, UK retailers told MCV this week they don’t expect the market to grow again until GTA V launches in September.
There are just a smattering of releases due over the next four months, as publisher gear up for the next generation of consoles.
“After 2012’s summer product drought which was blamed at the time on everything from the Olympics to the football to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, it is disappointing to see the games business apparently sleepwalking into the same situation again,” said Kim Bayley, director general of the Entertainment Retailers Association.
“The harsh truth is that new product drives business and without sufficient releases, sales will suffer”
Asda’s games boss Craig Thirkell added: “It’s going to be a long summer – inflation is ahead of wages, changes to benefits came in to effect this month and customers have less disposable money.
“I think a lot will depend upon several announcements and their timings. And also how the format holders continue to offer value to keep the hardware market as buoyant as possible, married with publisher support on key titles from Q4 and Q1 to keep the momentum going.
“I can’t give away too much, but we definitely have plans to engage customers and bring them plenty of opportunity to shop with us over the summer months.”

We got our hands on one of PowerA's new Moga Pro Android controllers, and so we decided to put together a little video detailing how it works. The Moga Pro is a full-sized console styled controller, complete with a cradle to attach Android phones (and a separate stand for tablets).
Overall, the experience of using the Moga Pro is a good one, providing much greater control compared to Android's usual touch screen controls. First-person shooters in particular are dramatically better, and the benefits for a reflex-intensive game like Pac-Man are obvious. We did notice a small amount of input lag while playing R-Type, but this seems to be a software issue, as other games like Dead Trigger played just fine.
There's also a strange bug in R-Type that can force users to exit other games and go back into R-Type. We contacted PowerA, and the bug seems to be confined specifically to R-Type. PowerA is reaching out to its developers to get it fixed.
The Moga Pro is available now for $50. Watch the video above for a full rundown.
Update: PowerA contacted Joystiq to let us know that R-Type has been updated, and the bug mentioned in the video should now be fixed.

The big Nintendo release this week is Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins, available today. A 3DS prequel to the recent Wii U game, early reviews have praised the portable version's variety of missions, but have also criticized the various (annoying but not game breaking) technical hiccups found in the game. Which makes finding a deal for Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins all the more appealing and/or important, especially if you had your heart set on picking up the game at launch.
Thankfully, many online retailers are happy to oblige. Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins is available for around $30 from Amazon, Best Buy, Target (in-store), and others. Whether this can be considered a deal depends on whom you talk to - some retailers are listing $29.99 as the MSRP, some consider it a sale price. Either way, it's definitely better than the 3DS software norm of $40. Toys R Us goes a step further - not only is the game $29.99, you'll also receive 70% off a second game (priced $19.99 or less) with your purchase. You'll require a coupon (PDF link) if you intend to buy in-store, or use promo code 959912 during online checkout.
Along with offering the 3DS game for $29.96 with free shipping, Amazon is including a free Chase McCain Lego figure with the purchase of Lego City Undercover for Wii U.
With the Lego City Undercover deals out of the way, let's move on to the other sales and promotions of the week! Best Buy is offering Paper Mario: Sticker Star ($19.99 shipped) and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror or Fate ($29.99 shipped) as part of their "action games" sale. I imagine Amazon will price match these offers eventually - here's a handy link if you want to check and see if they've done so. Toys R Us is offering a $15 gift card and free Batman action figure with the purchase of Injustice: Gods Among Us (in-store only with coupon (PDF link)). Finally, Target is temporarily discounting a number of titles for this week - their ad lists Just Dance 4 (Wii U, Wii) for $29.99 and Call of Duty: Black Ops (Wii U) for $49.99, with others in-store.If you were planning to take advantage of Club Nintendo's 3DS XL promotion, this would be the week to do it! Best Buy is taking $10 off 3DS XL systems, Target is taking $20 off, and Toys R Us is throwing in a $20 gift card when you purchase a 3DS XL with either Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. The TRU offer is in-store only, but being so close to Club Nintendo's promo expiration date of April 30th, this is probably for the better - you may want to buy locally to be sure you beat the deadline.

Executive chairman Eric Schmidt has revealed that consumers will likely be able to get their hands on Google Glass in a year’s time.
During an interview with BBC Radio 4’s World at One, Schmidt commented that Glass was ‘probably a year-ish away’.
Schmidt explained that Google will be looking for feedback from thousands of current Glass users who’ve bought developer models. “Based on their feedback, we'll make some product changes,” said Schmidt.
Google’s chairman explained that wearers of the technology will have to take responsibility for keeping information safe and understand when and where it is not appropriate to record your surroundings.
"It's obviously not appropriate to wear these glasses in situations where recording is not correct. And indeed, you have this problem already with phones.
“Companies like Google have a very important responsibility to keep your information safe, but you have a responsibility as well, which is to understand what you're doing, how you're doing it, and behave appropriately and also keep everything up-to-date."

With the recession impacting demand for home cinema and related categories, Dixons – the UK’s market-leading specialist electronics retailer – decided to repurpose one of its home theatre in-store departments into a destination for PC gamers: The Gaming Bunker.
It features ten networked PCs laid out tournament-style with high-end peripherals (mice, keyboards, headsets) merchandised on the walls. With mice and keyboards stretching well north of £150, the PCs act as a platform to try before you buy – which should help increase conversion. The PCs were custom-built internally by Dixons for the Bunker, an effort supported by Samsung, Intel, and Asus.
The retail assortment includes top gaming brands such as Razer, TurtleBeach, SteelSeries, Corsair, MadCatz, Roccat and Logitech.
While all of these products are available online, the Gaming Bunker adds roughly 150 premium SKUs to the store’s assortment. In a market dominated by online retailers, the decision by Dixons to open the Gaming Bunker is refreshingly well thought out.
It is a great way to create an engaging brand experience and drive awareness into the eSports community. The retailer intends for the product ranges in the trial format to change frequently, whilst the space will host events and product launches for the gaming community – both of which should ensure repeat traffic for the in-store gaming department. Dixons is to be applauded for this innovative concept.

The most spectacular vision associated with Oculus Rift isn’t in the device itself; it’s in and behind the eyes of the creatives behind it. And we’re not talking about a single pair of orbs – there are many key people behind the visionary Palmer Luckey. Though his youthful vision is the most eye-catching, his team consists of people like the horribly-successful games entrepreneur Brendan Iribe (Scaleform, Gaikai), a former Activision CEO, and a former nuclear engineer called Jack MacCauley, who built the Guitar Hero peripherals.Beyond the superteam, the device itself justifies our so-far ad-hominem hyperbole. We’ve tried both the duct-tape-and-dreams prototype and the heavily-upgraded and final develop model and we can see, simply, it works. As we’ve written elsewhere, there are significant problems with the current generation of Virtual Reality – constraints like the lack of strafe-tracking and the restricted field of vision that means converting games over to the Rift is more difficult than developing games specifically for it – but we are seeing the tech develop at a breathtaking pace. Not in decades nor years, but months. When we tried out the prototype device at the Evolve conference last year, we played Doom 3 and a limited version of Unreal 3 on it. Though the experience was impressive, we had issues with the comfort of the headset and the resolution of the screen. This time around, we tried out Hawken on the new headsets, with their new much-improved displays. Playing the most beautiful recent PC game on it was enthralling; standing on edges we felt genuinely vertiginous, impacts felt real and disorientating, and it added much to our enjoyment of the world. It’s the first non-essential peripheral we’ve been interested in buying since the Gyration Ultra mouse (which eventually became the Wiimote, remember).

The concept of gaming accessories may have just been taken to a whole new level. A company called Virtuix is developing theOmni, which is essentially a multidirectional treadmill that its creators call 'a natural motion interface for virtual reality applications.' The company posted a video showing someone playing Team Fortress 2 and using the Omni along with the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. You can see in the video how much running and movement this fellow performs. With something like the Omni in your living room, you'd likely get into pretty good shape in no time. Instead of Doritos and Mountain Dew, folks might have to start slamming back Power Bars and Gatorade for all night gaming sessions."

April 21st, 2013, 23:03 Posted By: wraggster
The Dos emulator for the RaspBerry Pihas been updated:
This new version has the following fixes and enhancements:
- New serial port emulation support, with rpix86 now forwarding data between emulated serial port COM1 and a USB-to-serial device connected to your Raspberry Pi. This new support might work also with the GPIO UART connection, but this is completely untested. Note that you will need to give the new -s[NUM] parameter to rpix86 when you launch it to enable serial port support. For example, if your device is connected to /dev/ttyUSB0, you would give parameter -s0. There is a special parameter -sA, which attempts to use the /dev/ttyAMA0 GPIO UART device.
Note that I have only tested this serial port emulation with the Telix communications program talking to my old modem, so it may or may not work with other serial port programs and serial devices. Let me know if you have problems with it, I can then try to improve the support.
- Changed the -w and -h parameters to not force 4:3 aspect ratio. In prior versions you could change the screen size using those parameters, but rpix86 always attempted to keep 4:3 aspect ratio (as used in practically all monitors during the DOS era). If you do not give those parameters rpix86 will still attempt to keep 4:3 aspect ratio. Note that you can also combine the overscan parameters with the screen size parameters, to get the rpix86 window to be pretty much whatever aspect ratio and located anywhere within your physical screen area.
- I also added a simple dialog window to show up when launching rpix86 inside the X Window environment, when rpix86 can not find 4DOS.COM. Previously rpix86 would just quit without showing anything in this situation. This feature is mainly to avoid frustration with new users (who don't RTFM :-) failing to launch rpix86 for the first time.
Now rpix86 will show the above dialog, and wait for the user to press either Y or N. The dialog will show the directory that will be used as the C: root, so if that is wrong you can just press N and adjust your launch directory or rpix86 parameters.
If you press Y, rpix86 will download 4DOS.COM to the directory shown, and then attempt to launch the actual main window. For some reason this seems to often fail with a "BadMatch" error message, so you may need to restart rpix86 manually.
- Added an icon to rpix86 application when running in X Window. The icon is shown also in the title bar of the above 4DOS question dialog.
- Added also the current version number to the X Window title bar.
- Enhanced the keyboard and mouse reading system, so that it will not slow down the actual emulation quite as much as before. I also added the joystick and serial port reading to the same system, so all of those are now handled somewhat more efficiently. I hope I didn't break anything when making this change.
Here below is again a screen copy that shows a couple of the new enhancements: New rpix86 icon in the title bar, showing the version number in the X Window title, and running Telix in rpix86. The Telix window shows the result of giving a command AT\S to my old modem, connected to my Raspberry Pi with a Prolific PL2303 USB to RS-232 adapter.
Thanks again for your interest in rpix86, I hope you find the improvements in this new version useful!

Sure, Omni-directional treadmills are nothing new, but Virtuix's take is worth a mention now that it's been shown off working in conjunction with the Oculus Rift. The company's been posting videos of its Omni treadmill working with Kinect for months, but last Thursday it upped the ante by adding the Rift. All told, it makes for what looks to be an intense VR session of Team Fortress 2 -- one-upping SixSenses' Razer Hydra demo for the VR headset. The company's been working on this unit as an affordable solution for households, aiming to eventually try for funding via Kickstarter. Catch the video demo after the break and please resist throwing money at the screen in an attempt to get in on the action early.

NPD Group is stating that during all-important December last year, one in five customers was going online for their purchase.
This is up from one in ten (10%) for the same period in 2012.
The majority of such online purchases were for items under AUD$50, with a significant drop-off occuring at the AUD$70+ mark. The main purchases made online are software (65%) and peripherals, while console hardware is still predominantly purchased offline. Console hardware and console software continues to be a major driver for retail.
Interestingly, less than 40% of retail purchases are made for the buyer. Most purchased in-store are gifts, while the inverse is true online.

Hit releases such as BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider were sadly unable to stop another month of annual decline in the US video games market.
Total video games industry sales declined ten per cent year-on-year to $1.9bn, Gamasutra reports. That is of course an improvement on February’s 25 per cent decline.
Digital games sales accounted for $670m of this total.
Fortunately the release of both BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider – both of which enjoyed record launches for their respective IPs – helped the month avoid an even steeper decline.
NPD added that March 2013 saw 20 per cent fewer boxed releases than March 2012 but that dollar value per SKU was around 70 per cent higher.
Hardware suffered the sharpest decline, falling 32 per cent $221.6m. 3DS was the only machine to grow sales year-on-year, creeping up nine per cent
The March US games chart is as follows:
1. Bioshock Infinite (Take-Two)
2. Tomb Raider 2013 (Square Enix)
3. Gears of War: Judgement (Microsoft)
4. God of War: Ascension (Sony)
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (Activision)
6. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Nintendo)
7. MLB 13: The Show (PS3, PSV) - Sony
8. NBA 2K13 (Two)
9. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct (Activision)
10. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 (Namco Bandai)

Gaming peripherals maker Razer has opted to honour orders made by customers who used an unauthorised discount code to gain heavily discounted products.
The code, which provided customers with a 90 per cent discount on Razer products, was produced by a third-party firm and was unauthorised by Razer themselves.
Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan took to the firm's Facebook to address the issue, stating: "A few days ago, a coupon code that provided a discount of 90% off Razer products at our UK Razerzone store went viral and thousands of orders were placed in the space of a couple of hours."
However, despite the unauthorised use of the code, Tan maintains that Razer will honour orders made by gamers, granting customers the purchase of a single unit of each product ordered. Tan highlights that the firm will limit purchases to single items in order to prevent bulk buying with the intention of commerical gain.
"While we have the option of cancelling the orders legally, we’ve always had a customer comes first policy at Razer and in respect of this incident, we have decided to honor the orders that were placed using the unauthorized code by Razer fans buying single products for their own use," continued Tan.
Whilst honouring the orders, the firm is set to incur a huge loss as a result of the move.
"Unfortunately, as the products are being sold well below their cost, it will likely cost us an insane amount of losses to make good on the orders which will really really hurt us as we’re still a small company - that much said, we want to do right by the community."
Razer has also warned those customers who've placed orders using the code that shipment of products may take weeks given the high-demand and scale of orders.
It's a sign of goodwill from a company that has often maintained a close relationship with its customers and core gaming fanbase, but one that will certainly leave the firm reeling.

We're clearly shameless, otherwise we wouldn't be here writing this piece starring a modded Xbox 360 gamepad with Engadget logos all over it. At least that's what we imagine you saying, dear reader, while ogling the logo-laden controller above. Despite appearances, however, there's more to Evil Controller's Vision line than flashy blue and white logos that make us feel loved -- the rear plate of the standard Xbox 360 gamepad gets replaced with a custom one featuring Evil's custom LED lights, a micro USB charging port (in addition to the proprietary one), and a much, much more serious battery.
A lithium ion nestles into the backplate (significantly more comfortably than two AAs or Microsoft's own rechargeable battery solution), which offers a supposed 60-hour battery life. That's a dramatic difference compared to Microsoft's batteries, which last (at most) around 15 hours in our experience. The hardware out front retains the quality we've come to expect from 360 gamepads, and that's because it's mostly the stock 360 gamepad you'd buy from Microsoft; the only replacement hardware on the front is the analog sticks, which swap concave for convex. This is essentially the only poor decision on the controller, but one we're willing to overlook for that tripled battery life.

We suspected it from the outset, but up until now, we haven't actually heard it confirmed from the mouth of a Google honcho: Google Glass runs on Android. The tidbit was dropped on today's earnings call, with CEO Larry Page uttering: "Obviously, Glass runs on Android, so [Android] has been pretty transportable across devices, and I think that will continue." The response was given to a question regarding engagement increment, but Page stopped short of divulging details about version type. We're guessing it does a fine job of integrating snippets of Google Now, however, so make of that what you will.

BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider had their best first-month sales in their respective franchises
The NPD Group has released its retail sales report for the month of March, and while some analysts had predicted growth, it was not to be. Total industry sales fell 10 percent year-on-year to $992.5 million, as hardware sales fell 32 percent to $221.6 million, but total software sales (including PC games) inched up two percent to $602.4 million.
That two percent climb actually represents "the first month since November 2011 where retail spending on entertainment software experienced positive growth,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan noted.
"The performance of new launches was a major driver of the overall software growth for this month, with games launching in March 2013 selling over 40 percent more units than new launches in March 2012. There were positive trends for new launches that were seen across consoles, portables, and PC," he continued. “There were actually fewer new launches - about 20 percent less new games - than last March, but March 2013 launches generated close to 70 percent more dollar sales per SKU than last year.”
NPD's March reporting period spanned five weeks, but so did March 2012. The industry just needed some more hits, as Callahan said. Irrational's critically acclaimed BioShock Infinite led the charge on software, followed by the new Tomb Raider and Microsoft's latest Gears of War. Nintendo also made an appearance with Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon placing sixth.
Interestingly, the launches of Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite "were the highest first month sales for games in these franchises,” Callahan said.

Disney has confirmed plans to release a new Star Wars film every year from 2015.
TotalFilm reports that the announcement was made at LA event CinemaCon. Apparently it will alternate each year between the numbered VII, VIII and IX ‘Episodes’ and a series of standalone movies rumoured to centre on characters such as Jedi master Yoda, bounty hunter Boba Fett and Han Solo.
It has been confirmed that Mission Impossible III and Star Trek director JJ Abrams will be handling Episode VII while Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg have already been recruited to pen the spin-offs.
However, with news earlier this month of Disney’s decision to close LucasArts, could the video games industry miss out on the cash bonanza?
"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,” Disney said at the time.
Even prior to this worrying news concerning reports about LucasArts’ Star Wars games output had already circulated. Promising gritty next-gen title Star Wars 1313 was apparently cancelled almost immediately upon Disney’s purchase of LucasFilm as the company was apparently only interested in titles associated with its movie reboot plans.
Will Disney license out the IP to other developers and publishers to movie-associated console releases? Or will instead it choose to focus on more mainstream projects like associated Facebook and smartphone titles? Or could – gulp – the games industry miss out altogether?
