Games critics didn’t like Aliens: Colonial Marines.
The game’s Metacritic score was just 49. But despite the critical mauling it reached No.1 during its launch week and is the fastest selling game of the year so far.
Meanwhile, last year’s XCom: Enemy Unknown was loved by game reviewers. And although it didn’t sell badly, its sales paled in comparison to critical disappointments Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Resident Evil 6.
YouGov research conducted in 2010 regarding film reviews found that the public place little faith in critics. Only one per cent of those surveyed valued the opinions of the experts at Empire and Total Film.
This survey inspired popular film critic Mark Kermode to write: “No matter what anyone tells you, audiences generally don’t trust critics one jot.”
Is this true of game critics?
“Reviews make a big impact,” insists 2K president Christoph Hartmann.
“Take the Top 10 and put it against the scores, you’ll see very few titles which didn’t score at least 80. It’s just a direct correlation between the quality of the game and the sales numbers. High scores is the foundation. Without them, there’s no chance of success.”
Hartmann isn’t wrong. The Top Five games of last year – Call of Duty, FIFA 13, Assassin’s Creed III, Halo 4 and Hitman: Absolution all scored ‘positive’ (75 or above) review aggregator on Metacritic.
"And just because a game tops the charts it doesn’t
make it a success. Medal of Honor: Warfighter hit
No.1 but it sold well below EA’s internal expectations
and the franchise has now been taken ‘out of rotation'."
And just because a game tops the charts it doesn’t make it a success. Medal of Honor: Warfighter hit No.1 but it sold well below EA’s internal expectations and the franchise has now been taken ‘out of rotation.’
Resident Evil 6, too, may have shipped almost 5m units. But Capcom was disappointed and changed its financial outlook for the year as a result.
It’s all about expectation. XCom may not have been a sales sensation, but it was, in the words of its publisher 2K, a ‘success’. It didn’t have a multi-million pound marketing campaign like Resident Evil or Medal of Honor, it wasn’t created over multiple years by a huge development team. It was probably more profitable than many of the big titles launched last year.
But the question remains: What level of impact do reviews have on a game’s performance?
Social media agency Precise tracks review score sentiment online. So we reached out to the firm’s games analyst Kris Nordgren to uncover if Medal of Honor’s reviews impacted consumers’ intent to purchase.
Based on tweets and online comments, Nordgren found that, of the sample he studied, 31 per cent agreed with a negative review and said they would not buy or recommend the game as a result. Only ten per cent disagreed with the negative reviews, while three per cent agreed with the few positive reviews the game attracted (the remaining 56 per cent didn’t indicate either way).
It suggests that poor reviews of the game did have an impact on the its commercial performance:
“The results on social media correlate with other research results that showed reviews do influence perceptions and intent to purchase,” Nordgren concludes.
“In this case, negative reviews stopped some consumers who had previously intended to buy the game from doing so. After having read reviews, one third decided not to buy.
“Although peer opinion is a strong influence on game perception, these opinions were often based on published reviews.”

Film and video games are very different mediums. Movies are more mass-market for one, but also they’re cheaper. Consumers may be willing to risk Transformers 3 for £8 a ticket, but for £35?
Good critical success doesn’t necessarily equal good sales on its own. If that were the case then World of Goo and Okami would be amongst the biggest selling games of all time.
Instead it requires a combination of quality gameplay with excellent marketing. Skyrim and Borderlands 2 are two perfect examples. Neither title (one a deep RPG, the other a cel-shaded shooter) are initially the sort you’d expect to see amongst the best sellers, but they were excellent titles and heavily promoted with inventive marketing. As a result, they were both amongst last year’s top selling titles.
Games can succeed or fail for multiple reasons. Fans may not like the new direction of a title or a game could happen to capitalise on a new fitness phenomenon. But in general, quality is vital. Gamers are more demanding than ever, and they don’t tolerate poor games.

If a certain system can be used to trick children into spending thousands of dollars, then it's probably not a very ethical system.
I won't stand here and tell you that microtransactions are the devil. I won't even call them a necessary evil. "Evil" is too strong a word. Cliff Bleszinski did a good job of defending them here yesterday. But the freemium model is still a deeply flawed system, as evidenced by the five-year-old who (more or less accidentally) spent $2,500 of his parents' money in the free-to-play gameZombies vs Ninja this week. He's not the only one, either—there are so many similar cases that this week Apple had to settle a class-action suit brought by distraught and disgruntled parents who felt their kids had been exploited.
(Apple did so by doling out $5 iTunes credits, which is a little like saying, "Sorry the apps in our store exploited your children for money, but here, go buy some more apps." That's besides the point, though.)
Are lax parents who give their kids their iTunes passwords to blame? I don't think so.

[Andrei Istodorescu] has been hard at work building a 7″ touch-screen rig which runs XBMC. It may be upside-down, but the Raspberry Pi board which is front and center is still easily recognizable. There’s a lot of stuff connected to it in order to pull this off, and even more software configuration. But as you can see in the clip after the break he did get it working!
The screen is an eGalaxy 7″ touch sensitive module he picked up on eBay. It sounds like it was meant for a backup camera in the dashboard of a car. He compiled his own Linux kernel to add support for the screen. It uses HDMI for the video interface with the driver board, and the touchscreen connects to one of the USB ports. The rest of the setup involves compiling XBMC with touchscreen support and calibrating the screen to accurately sense input.

2,500 attendees reveal industry trends to new platforms and the rise of indies
Developers are increasingly snubbing console development for smartphones and tablets, a new survey from the Game Developers Conference claims.
Gathering responses from 2,500 GDC attendees past and present, the survey found that 55 per cent of developers were creating their current games for mobile and tablet.
Displaying the increasing trend toward these platforms over recent years, a lesser 38 per cent of developers said they had released their last game for smartphones and tablets, while 58 per cent were considering launching their next game for the devices.
PC and Mac proved to be the second most popular platforms, with almost 50 per cent of those who answered the survey stating their ambitions to publish their next games on the systems.
Console meanwhile lagged behind somewhat, with 13 per cent of developers creating titles for Xbox 360 and another 13 per cent developing for PS3.

Japanese weekly Wii U hardware sales have fallen below PlayStation Vita's for the first time.Wii U sold 9633 units in Japan last week, according to number-cruncher Media Create (viaNeoGAF). Vita sold 11,456 units - the handheld's highest weekly tally for some time. The bump is probably due to some stores acting early on the recently announced Japanese price drop. That discount isn't supposed to go into effect until tomorrow, so expect Vita numbers to be higher again next week.By comparison, PlayStation 3 sold nearly double - 18,529 - what Wii U managed. And as in other weeks, 3DS was miles ahead of everything with 74,729 sales. Why are Wii U figures so low? As with Europe and the US, Japan also lacks new Wii U games. This week did see the launch of arcade shooter Tank! Tank! Tank!, but it could only muster 13th place. It doesn't help Nintendo's cause that high profile Wii U games Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101 and Wii Fit U are still without a release date.

Harris Poll finds majority of US parents believe games contribute to teen violence, 38% entirely unaware of ESRB
Most American parents believe the violence in games is tied to violence in the real world. As reported byVentureBeat, a Harris Poll survey set for release later this week found that 58 percent of 2,278 US adults surveyed think that video games contribute to violent behavior in teenagers.
The poll also found that 38 percent of parents were completely unaware of the Entertainment Software Rating Board system. That contradicts the ESRB's own surveys, which have found only 15 percent of parents are unaware of the industry's rating system. Speaking with GamesIndustry International earlier this month, ESRB president Patricia Vance said awareness of the system may have peaked, although she added educational efforts would continue.
Violence in games became a point of cultural debate once again last year after the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting. The National Rifle Association responded to calls for stricter gun control by casting the blame on violent media, with executive vice president Wayne LaPierre calling gaming "a callous, corrupt, and corrupting shadow industry that sells and sows violence against own people." Last month, President Barack Obama called for research into possible ties between gaming and real-world violence in a package of proposals to address the problem of mass shootings. Stricter gun control measures were also part of his plan.

Just how much are games for the PS4 going to cost?
It seems that publishers are yet to decide how high they dare go with their launch PS4 software, although comments from EA suggest that prices should stay roughly in line with what we’ve seen this generation.
"Typically at the start of a cycle you've seen the pricing raised to, say, $69 for a core piece of software," chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen told the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, according toPolygon.
Stressing that EA has not yet nailed down its pricing strategy, he added: "And then over the life of those it's drifted down to an introduction price of around $59. We haven't yet set pricing on our gen-fours but you'll probably see a similar trend to that during the start of the next cycle."
EA reps then contacted the site to stress that Jorgensen “meant to use software price examples of $59 and $49”.
He’s a chief financial officer – we’re sure he probably did mean $69!
Many cling on to loose hope that an increased focus on digital in the upcoming generation will lead to a lowering of game RRPs.
Good luck with that.

PS4 and the next Xbox are 8 to 10 times the power of the current generation consoles and games are expected to cost around $69, EA executives Rajat Taneja and Blake Jorgensen have said.Speaking at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, Jorgensen also explained why EA wasn’t part of last week’s PlayStation Meeting. EA’s global chief technology officer and executive vice president Rajat Taneja described PS4 and the next Xbox’s tech as a “gigantic leap for our industry”.“I won’t go into the nitty-gritty of every component, but if you look at it in an aggregate basis, the new consoles are between 8 and 10 times the power of the current generation,” he said.“The architecture of the consoles is based on standard PC components and technologies. So our own investments in our back end engine like Frostbite, our libraries, our tools will very smoothly run on this and make it easier for us to innovate to the new console technologies themselves. What used to take months in the past will now take days to do.”Next-gen software pricing was also discussed at the event, with Jorgensen anticipating a price rise with the launch of the new consoles.“I think, typically, at the start of a cycle, you’ve seen the pricing raise, say, to $69 for a core piece of software,” he said. “And then over the life of those, that’s drifted down to introduction price, typically now around $59. We haven’t yet set pricing on our gen 4s, but you probably see a similar trend to that during the start of the next cycle.”Jorgensen was also asked why EA wasn’t part of PlayStation Meeting last week. “I think it’s more about timing of our own slate, as well as trying to maintain a good balance of power with all the parties out there and choosing when to unveil certain pieces of software,” he explained. “I’d say between now and E3, you’re going to see a lot of stuff from us and we just choose, on our marketing cadence, as to when to start to announce stuff.”

More powerful consoles will free developers from memory and bandwidth constraints, says publisher
The next generation of consoles is coming, and EA is eager for the shift.
Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference about the new PlayStation 4, CTO Rajat Taneja and CFO Blake Jorgensen said their company was more than prepared for the transition to new consoles.
"We have never been as prepared or more ready for the start of a new console cycle," said Taneja.
One reason for excitement about new consoles is quite simple: a more powerful console means fewer constraints on development teams regarding bandwidth and memory.
Taneja said this would lead to and "unprecedented" gameplay experience for consumers.

February 25th, 2013, 21:22 Posted By: wraggster
FBI profilers don't view video games as a cause of shootings and other violent crime, a former profile said yesterday morning on CBS' Face the Nation.
Profilers still include an interest in games when making their threat assessment of whether a person is at risk to act out violently, Mary Ellen O'Toole (above) told the public affairs show. Profilers also examine if an offender used video games as a kind of planning tool for carrying out an attack. However, "We don't see these as the cause of violence," she said. "We see them as sources of fueling ideation that's already there."
O'Toole's remarks align with the finding of another study performed by the U.S. Secret Service, albeit 10 years ago, which found that 12 percent of those who had committed violent crimes at a school had an interest in violent video games. More of them—37 percent—wrote things that expressed an interest in violence.
Christopher Ferguson, the professor of psychology at Texas A&M International and a critic of those who blame video games for violent crime, also appeared on the panel, warning against the "moral panic" that scapegoats new media for societal ills. Ferguson repeated the oft-cited statistic that violent crime among youths has actually receded to its lowest point in 40 years, despite games becoming more sophisticated and ostensibly more violent over that span. Ferguson added that this has no causal relationship to violent crime, either. In January, henoted to Kotaku that there have been more than 100 studies of video game violence and aggressive or violent behavior, and "most of them are horrible."
I'm still cynical that any of this moves the needle on the actual policy debate, however. Once politicians have identified what they think is the cause of a problem, it's difficult to budge them off it, especially if it involves a wedge issue such as gun control.
"We're in a mode of worry about—or panicking about this type of media," Ferguson cautioned. "We may do some putting the cart before the horse, and we may see some people sort of starting with a conclusion and trying to assemble data in a very selective way to try to support that conclusion." I think that's exactly what we've seen.

Obviously games will look impressive on the PS4 and the upcoming new Xbox, but don’t expect the same sort of graphical leap we’ve seen in the past.
The reason, according to BioWare’s director of art and animation Neil Thompson, is that the expenditure needed to do so is simply too high.
“In the last generation the perception was that it was going to be a ten times improvement over the previous generation,” he told OXM. “For the next generation there will be a big leap, but it won't be as obvious.
“People will do things in a cleverer fashion – and I have to be careful here as there are non-disclosure agreements involved. I think they'll be better prepared, shall we say – but we can't see a ten-fold team increase again as the budgets would just be ridiculous. You'd have to sell 20-30 million copies before you broke even.”
Indeed, Thompson also warns developers that they should be preparing themselves now for the financial challenges that await.
“Clearly we still hammer up against the limitations of the hardware on a daily basis and if you push those parameters back, as I'm sure the next-gen will do, we'll hit them again,” he added.
“I think the main thing is that the industry doesn't get itself into a corner where it becomes economically unviable to make a game. The last technology iteration caught folks by surprise - especially the number of people you needed and the skillset jump that was required to do the work that people expected.”

February 25th, 2013, 17:26 Posted By: wraggster
Controversial US analyst Michael Pachter slammed the UK games market last week, insisting that it's impossible for retailers to make money. Was he right?
Predicting anything in this industry can be a dangerous game.
After Farmville, Zynga was going to be the biggest games corporation in the world. During the GameCube era, Nintendo’s demise was a forgone conclusion. OnLive was going to change the world in 2009.
But despite the industry’s habit to change radically on a regular basis, US analyst Michael Pachter has made his name out of predicting the future of games.
He, like the rest of us, is wrong more often as he is right. But there’s no denying that he knows his stuff. And when he decided to look beyond his US homeland he had some critical things to say about UK games retail.
In a Digital Spy article on games retail (which reheated stories that MCV?has been running all year) he said that UK games retail was a ‘joke’, that it can’t make any money due to price discounting, and that US retailer GameStop has avoided the UK market for that very reason.
We asked him to clarify his statement.
“By ‘joke’ I mean that the competitive landscape has put conventional specialty retailers in a position of being unable to make a profit,” he explained.
“Some of this is due to operating costs, some due to the price of games relative to average income, some due to slowing traffic in light of the lingering recession. The larger impact is that used games aren’t as popular in the UK as the US. GameStop averages over 20 per cent of sales as used. GAME averages around 10 per cent. The margins make up the difference between profit and loss.
“By joke, I was referring to supermarket pricing, and how that plus high costs have prevented GameStop from expanding into the market. Eventually, consumers will have fewer choices if specialty retailers go away.”
"The larger impact is that used games aren’t as popular
in the UK as the US. GameStop averages over
20 per cent of sales as used. GAME averages
around 10 per cent." Michael Pachter
It’s easy to dismiss Pachter’s opinion. He’s a US analyst for one, what does he know of our market? And his information is out-of-date. The days of supermarkets cutting prices to sub £30 hasn’t happened to years.
But his point does stand.
“He is 100 per cent correct, as he quite rightly points to the debris left on the High Street as proof of his argument,” says CHIPS boss Don McCabe, who has had to close many of his shops during the recent market downturn. “But will it make a difference?”
John Lewis has also found selling games a challenging task. Games buyer Robert Hennessey told MCV: “I agree with Pachter. Profitability threatens the long term viabity of UK games retail.”
It’s certainly not easy for games retail. But impossible to make money? ‘A joke’?
ShopTo has grown in recent years, but the online firm’s CEO Igor Cipolletta insists success should not be restricted to etailers.
“Some retailers may choose to retail below cost. But to say UK retail is a joke is to oversimplify the situation.
“Stating that it’s impossible to make a profit suggests a retailer’s inability to provide the expected service level, coupled with appropriate pricing, stock level and variety, or it suggests that their overheads are too high.
“If etailers are still able to turn a profit, there’s no excuse for a High Street retailer not to, especially as we survive without the cash cow of preowned.
“Many High Street chains may finally be waking to the realisation that overpaid executives are a millstone around the neck of large. And they’re notoriously slow to react to market changes and customer expectations.”
Michael Pachter’s point about the popularity of pre-owned in the US and the low prices in the UK may be linked. New game prices are low in this country, but surely that’s because consumers don’t agree with the current pricing? Hence why so many US gamers are buying used.
And if pre-owned really is being blocked with the next consoles, then software pricing will likely come under even more pressure, and not just in the UK
“Historically, the release of next gen has reinvigorated the industry,” added Cipolletta.
“But gamers have reacted negatively to whispers that the new machines may not be capable of playing preowned titles. And coupled with the stagnating economy, moreso than ever the price of the hardware as well as the software will dictate whether the new generation will ensure retail enjoys a healthy holiday season.”

Studios could have to sell 20-to-30 million copies to break even if game budgets and team sizes increase
The industry should be wary not to back itself into a corner and make game development economically unviable on next generation consoles, BioWare’s director of art and animation has warned.
Speaking to OXM, Neil Thompson said that the last generation of hardware caught many developers off guard with the required skillsets to make games.
He stated that the industry cannot afford another ten-fold team increase in development costs and team sizes, as studios would likely have to sell 20-to-30 million copies of a triple-A title just to break even.
Thompson added however that although next generation consoles would be a big leap from the current hardware, it wouldn’t be as obvious graphically.
“I think the main thing is that the industry doesn't get itself into a corner where it becomes economically unviable to make a game,” said Thompsom.

Hi all, the last few days i have unmerged all the news forums so that news forums now only support one console or maybe a few for the likes of the Open Source Handhelds. I had to go through thousands of threads trying to sort them out into the right forum.
That was a massive task but due to googles rules about duplication its unavoidable, to understand better the PSP/PSvita news forum was supplying both the PSP and PSvita site so duplication all over. So by spliting the news forums back to supporting one site only i hope that google will eventually move us back up the rankings, but if not at least news on a certain console is a lot easier to find.
From now on ill work on site by site adding links of interest to each site that corresponds to that console etc.
Thanks for your time
