Tech journalist Milo Yiannopoulos asks the question lurking in everyone's mind about Google Glass. 'It's an audacious product for a company no one trusts to behave responsibly with our data: a pair of glasses that can monitor and record the world around you,' he writes. 'But if Glass becomes as ubiquitous as the iPhone, are we truly to believe that Google will not attempt to abuse that remarkable power?' With each new eyebrow-raising court judgment and federal fine levied against Google, he adds, 'it becomes ever more clear that this is a company hell-bent on innovating first and asking questions later, if ever. And its vision, shared with other California technology companies, is of corporate America redefining societal privacy norms in the service of advertising companies and their clients.' He feels that Google will eventually end up in some sort of court battle over Google Glass and privacy. Do you agree? Does Google Glass deserve extra scrutiny before it hits the market?"

Video games will play a major role in the future of Blockbuster UK, the retailer has told MCV.
The rental firm was rescued by Gordon Brothers Europe last week. There are 264 remaining Blockbuster outlets with 2,000 employees.
The firm aims to improve Blockbuster’s profitability with new products, technologies and ‘better basic retailing’.
Former HMV commercial boss Gary Warren will head up the new Blockbuster. Warren was responsible for HMV’s ecommerce offering, which is sure to be a key area of focus for Blockbuster UK.
The buyout is certainly good news for the trade.
“Games retail has been hard hit of late, by some of the most difficult trading conditions we’ve seen,” PlayStation’s UK commercial director Alex Coultate told MCV.
“It’s great news that a long-standing and well respected retailer will live on.”

BioShock Infinite takes the number one spot in the UK all-formats chart this week, achieving the second-biggest launch of the year after Square Enix’s Tomb Raider, which holds on to number two. Unsurprisingly, Infinite also sets the record for the biggest BioShock launch, shifting almost 9000 more copies than BioShock 2 did in its opening week.
Gears of War: Judgment’ falls to number three while FIFA 13 keeps hold of the number four spot. Next Level Games’ Luigi’s Mansion 2, meanwhile, makes a strong debut at number five.
Number six is also a new entry, EA’s Army Of Two: The Devil’s Cartel – an EA has a second debut at number eight this week, in the form of Tiger Woods PGA 14.
Outside of the top ten, Traveller’s Tales Lego City Undercover finds its way to number 12, while 31 is occupied by Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time.

This year at CES we saw the emergence of a group of companies putting out innovative products that were funded by Kickstarter.
As a refresher, Kickstarter is a platform that allows entrepreneurs to connect with advocate consumers who pledge money up front to the business in return for goods and services later – think of it like a crowd-sourced research and development pre-order. The poster child of this is the Pebble watch which received $10 million worth of funding last year.
In 2012 we saw consumers embrace the ability to choose and tailor the assortment that goes onto retailers’ shelves through some innovative promotions and applications like Walmart’s ‘Get on the Shelf’ campaign. We anticipate 2013 will extend this one additional step by empowering consumers to choose which products actually get built, often from smaller startup companies that will compete head to head against the large global brands. Retailers and suppliers should expect new products to come from unexpected places with a more heightened level of consumer awareness, and at a faster pace than before.

Like any consumer I’m careful when I shop, especially on the High Street, and I don’t like to feel like I’m being ripped off. If it’s too expensive, I won’t buy it. I even check prices on my smartphone first when I’m out. So it’s no shock to see HMV and Jessops disappear from our town centres when they just don’t appear to understand the principal?
Jessops, Xmas 2012. I want a video camera that’s £150 online. Jessops and their helpful sales chap want £180 for the same one. Currys (next door) £160. Argos £150. Where’s my incentive to keep the sales guru in Jessops in work and the store open? Argos offered online pricing in-store, so guess where I bought it?
Game, Xmas 2011. Xbox Disney Kinect - Game online £20, Game in-store £38. ‘We can’t match online pricing as it’s a different business’, says the salesman. So where’s my incentive to keep the shop open? Offer it to me at £23-£25 and I’ll walk out the door with it.
Yes, High Street stores are expensive to run, but why not at least try to keep in-line or just a small amount above online pricing to encourage people back to the High Street? DSG have recently announced they’ll do it, so why don’t all shops follow suit... and fast, before the High Street dies completely.
Oh, one last thing. Town centre managers – stop charging for parking. You’re literally driving customers away.

Just a couple days after we got our hands on Tenya Wanya Teen's crazy 16-button arcade stick, we were treated to its polar opposite; Divekick's two-button controller. Created by Iron Galaxy Studios just to show off the game at PAX East, the controller consists of two buttons slightly larger than the palms of our hands; the yellow one denotes a jump or dive, while the blue corresponds to a kick. As a parody of the fighting genre, Divekick's gameplay avoids complicated combo moves, is incredibly simple and immensely enjoyable, if we do say so ourselves.
Unlike traditional fighting games, the health bars are essentially meaningless, as a single power hit can take down your rival. Therefore you're focused on just the most basic movements -- a common one involves jumping in the air, tapping the other button for the downward kick, and then tapping it again to fly backwards. As for moving your character about, a jump and kick combo will get you charging towards your foe. Some characters let you fly when jumping, while others reward pressing buttons simultaneously. From our few minutes mashing the controller, it seems that timing and position are more important than ever with such fundamental mechanics, and ones that we picked up pretty quickly. We especially enjoyed kicking our adversary in the head to make them dazed and vulnerable in the early seconds of the next round.

Oculus Rift is in the mail! Development kits began shipping to customers on Wednesday, and even if you have yet to receive a tracking number of your own, a kit may very well be on its way. The Oculus team has been "tied up at GDC" this week, which explains the delay in sending out tracking info, but folks taking care of logistics have apparently been hard at work, prepping some 10,000 development kits for shipment. Of course, not every set will be on its way to a developer right away -- it does take time to get that many kits out the door -- but if you're expecting one at your front porch, it's likely to arrive very soon. In the meantime, the Developer Center has opened up to devs, with access to the SDK, Unity and Unreal Engine integrations, forums, wiki and other documentation. The team also published a video of its SXSW panel in full for your enjoyment -- you can catch it just past the break.

The executive producer at EA studio DICE has questioned whether any game development studios know the final specs of next gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

Speaking to CVG about the upcoming hardware transition during a wide-ranging Battlefield 4 interview conducted at GDC this week, the series' executive producer Patrick Bach said:"I don't know if anyone has the next-gen hardware to be honest - really. There are versions of it, but does anyone have the final hardware? Do we really know what the final hardware will be?"There are specs and alpha hardware, but nobody knows exactly what it will be. The only thing I can say about what we're building is that we've set the bar with what we can do and we can scale it down to 360 and PS3."It is believed that development kits for both the PS4 and Next Xbox are being distributed across the games development sector, though Bach did not confirm this. The media has been gripped by a frenzy of speculation regarding the final specs of Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's rival platform, though the numbers are constantly shifting as each new report comes through. On the subject of the first Battlefield 4 gameplay video, which was released earlier this week, Bach explained: "What you saw is pre-alpha - it's not the final game or anything. We are lacking a lot of optimisation. Without going into detail about what it could look like on a lower spec machine or a higher spec machine, we will have the scalability to bring the most out of any piece of hardware."The demo is the visual target of what we want the game to look like, and when I say visual target I don't want people to confuse that with rendering pictures that you could never create in the actual game - when we create our visual targets a big part of that is to make it realistic, as in you will be able to run it on a machine that you can buy."We've seen visual targets that are pre-rendered or running on machines that are designed for showing off technology - this is the game. [Single-player producer] Tobias was playing the game in the Frostbite engine with the content that we're using to build the game."Sony revealed PS4 last month and confirmed a PS4 release date of "holiday 2013" in at least one of Japan, Europe and the US.Meanwhile, it has become a growing expectation in the industry that Microsoft will announce its next-generation Xbox platform at a special event in late April.

Just because you have a Raspberry Pi, and the know-how to change the world, doesn't mean you want to do everything the hard way. For those who haven't already appliedthe 12.1 update to XBMC running on their Raspberry Pi, the Raspbmc team is now eager to handle the dirty work for you. Wondering how easy it is to upgrade? Just reboot your Pi and wait about 15 minutes. Seriously, that's all the elbow grease required to receive a litany of fixes and enhancements in the latest version of XBMC as well as a number of specific patches for Raspbmc. Specifically, there is a newer version ofHDMI-CEC, improved support for internet streams and third-party modules, and finally, a few security fixes.

March 29th, 2013, 00:01 Posted By: wraggster
UK retailers are rallying against reported plans to prevent pre-owned sales on the next Xbox.
Website VGLeaks reported last week that Microsoft’s next console will require a permanent online connection and will not need to read optical discs once a game has been installed.
The report adds weight to persistent rumours that Microsoft’s next console will block second-hand games – something Sony says will not happen on PS4.
“If Microsoft blocks pre-owned, it will be shooting itself in the foot,” says Insane Games’ Gregory Smith. “There could well be a shift in the market towards Sony and the PS4.”
Games Centre boss Robert Lindsay added: “The publishers are completely out of touch with consumers if they don’t understand how important pre-owned is in funding new releases.
“A new release with no sell-on value will put a massive hole in consumers’ spending budgets. At a time when retail is struggling, this will create an even quicker downward spiral.”
Some retailers stated they may consider not stocking the device if they are unable to make money from it. Others expressed concerns over the dependence on an ‘always-on’ internet connection.
“The UK broadband infrastructure isn’t robust or fast enough for this to be a prerequisite,” said Dixons Retail’s category manager for gaming Christopher Rogers. “Surely the teething troubles with SimCity are a warning against this?”
Chips boss Don McCabe surmises that Microsoft may focus on customers who regularly spend on Xbox Live.
“Blocking second-hand and forcing always-on connection will make the retail market shrink rapidly, but Microsoft will still make a profit out of Xbox,” he said. “As for the rest of us, tough titty.”

Industry needs to be spurred on by financial gain to adopt changes, says BioWare writer
The game industry needs better financial motivation to encourage more developers to use female protagonists in games, the lead writer of Dragon Age III has said.
Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, BioWare’s David Gaider said that developers and publishers as a whole largely relied on generally accepted industry wisdom that certain genres or ideas were not as popular and could not be as successful as others.
Citing EverQuest as an example, Gaider explained that when the MMO reached 800,000 subscribers at is height, it was generally accepted by the industry that the 800,000 was essentially the market cap for the genre that was already being catered for.
That was until World of Warcraft came along as a game-changer and proved the accepted industry wisdom was wrong.
He said that for more games to star female protagonists, more examples needed to be given that these titles could be as successful as those starring male characters in the lead role. Although accepting this was a jump in logic, he said it didn’t stop the industry trying to justify it.

Robyn Tovey, account executive at GfK takes a look at the keyboard market and how the humble peripheral is benefitting from the tablet boom...
As predicted, 2012 was a very significant year for the media tablet market, with full year sales volume being 267 per cent higher compared to 2011. December 2012 alone saw more media tablets sold in GfK’s tracked retail channels than notebook sales in the whole of Q4. This growth was partly driven by the increase of smaller media tablets, which generally have lower average selling prices (ASPs); ASPs saw a decline of 23 per cent year on year in 2012.
We are also seeing 52 per cent more brands competing in the media tablet market, and 126 per cent different models available to the consumer in 2012 compared to the previous year. It seems likely these trends will continue in 2013 as the lower prices in this product group have made buying a media tablet a more viable purchase for many consumers.
Cordless keyboards have benefited from the uprising of the media tablet, with year-on-year volume and value growths of 35 per cent and 30 per cent respectively in 2012. The growth of cordless keyboards comes as no surprise, as this peripheral enables consumers to utilise their tablet for content creation instead of just content consumption.
Uses for cordless keyboards are not limited to tablets. It is likely that cordless keyboard sales are also being driven by smart TV sales, which saw a volume and value growth of 70 per cent and 57 per cent respectively in 2012 compared to 2011. Bluetooth keyboards in particular saw the bulk of cordless sales growth after displaying year on year volume growth of 129 per cent in December. Following the boost in the demand for cordless keyboards, 2012 saw 12 per cent more brands in the market than 2011.
It is an entirely different story for the traditional corded keyboard, which declined in value by 29 per cent year- on-year in 2012. With consistent year-on-year volume and value declines in each month of 2012, it seems that the cordless keyboard could be replacing the corded keyboard altogether.
From September 2012 onwards, cordless keyboards have surpassed the corded keyboard in volume sales. The value of the cordless market has been more than double the corded keyboard market since May 2012.
The same trends are occurring within the mice market; the corded mouse has been in decline while its corded equivalent is in growth. Volume declines reached 19 per cent for the corded mouse in 2012. Cordless mice on the other hand grew at a rate of seven per cent in volume in 2012.
The failure for cordless mice to match the volume growth of cordless keyboards comes as little surprise, as this segment does not yield the same productive success for content creation on a tablet as the cordless keyboard.
Yet, some growth is expected for the cordless mouse, as it is an equally important peripheral for the smart TV.

3DS exclusive squeezes out strong competition from One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2
Nintendo's 3DS exclusive Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon narrowly beat the PlayStation 3 version of Namco Bandai's One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 to the top spot in Japan last week.
According to data released by Media Create, sourced by CVG, Luigi's Mansion sold 280,151 units in its debut week, only slightly more than One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2's 274,625 units. However, the Vita version's 60,315 units made it the highest selling IP of the week.
Konami's Pro Baseball Spirits also sold well, shifting 101,389 units on PlayStation 3 and 80,618 units on PSP, placing third and fourth respectively. Gears of War: Judgment entered the chart at number 12 with 23,500 sales.
The hardware charts remained fairly static, with the 3DS (76k) still on top, followed by the Vita (41k) and the PlayStation 3 (22k). However, all three platforms sold around 10 per cent more than the previous week thanks to the popularity of the software releases.

Mobile advocate Ben Cousins has questioned how long the home console experience can last in the face of increasing uptake of mobile devices.
Speaking to Bloomberg, the former EA exec supported evidence that showed an increasing migration of developers away from consoles to mobile platforms.
“It’s anarchy out there, and these big companies are finding it difficult to steer their supertankers,” he said, speaking about the traditional console giants, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
A GDC survey of 2,500 people found that 58 per cent of North American developers are planning their next games for smartphones and tablets.
On the other hand, consoles lagged behind. Only 11 per cent expected to work on Sony or Microsoft’s upcoming consoles, and 6.4 per cent for Nintendo’s Wii U.

March 27th, 2013, 23:44 Posted By: wraggster
It seems inevitable that free-to-play will play a big part in the next generation of consoles.
Last year Xbox launched Happy Wars, its first freemium game. And that game now boasts a player base of over 2m.
PS4 allows for free-to-play titles and even Nintendo is eyeing micro-transactions for Wii U and 3DS.
Crysis developer Crytek believes free-to-play is the future of games, and the firm’s boss Cevat Yerli told MCV last year: “If consoles don’t join free-to-play aggressively from now on, then it will be outpaced by PC and mobile. If they don’t adapt they’re not going to survive.”
David Reid of CCP, the developer of upcoming PS3 free game Dust 514, added: “What is common now on the PC, tablet and mobile is likely to become the primary way of monetising console games by the end of this next generation.”
BUT ARE THEY RIGHT?
Freemium could well play a major role with the next Xbox and PlayStation. But console gamers are a different breed of player to those who play Bejeweled Blitz on iOS or Candy Crush Saga on Facebook.
“Something like free-to-play on a smartphone or a tablet is one thing when you’ve bought the device already, but on PS4 you are talking about people who will have made a reasonably significant investment in their gaming console,” said Sony Europe boss Jim Ryan.
“It’s a different consumer. You are not talking about someone who bought an iPad to read books and who might fancy dabbling with a free gaming experience. Whatever the price point, somebody would have made that financial commitment to PS4. Free-to-play has potentially an interesting role to play, but it might be a different role to what we’ve seen so far on other platforms.”
It’s an interesting observation. Free is a great way to encourage casual players to try new games on their phoens or PC. But when it comes to committed console owners, is free-to-play as important?
Ubisoft says that there will be a variety of monetisation methods over the next generation for different platforms.
“We do a few games on PC that are free,” said CEO Yves Guillemot. “It is one way to monetise our games. We’ll have a diversity of machines in the future and a diversity of monetisation. For us it’s good to work with all of the methods so we can adapt. People just want great content, so you have to make sure you understand all the ways they want to pay for that content.”
FREE FOREVER
Free-to-play does have a place on console. It allows games to cut above the noise. Would Happy Wars be one of the big Xbox Live games of the last six months had it been a paid download? Unlikely.
Nevertheless, to suggest that micro-transactions will be the ‘primary’ monetisation method by the end of the next generation is far from certain. The reaction from gamers when EA stated that all of its future games would have micro-transactions (which it has since retracted) was overwhelmingly negative, which shows there’s resistance to the free-to-play revolution.
There is a role for free games on the new consoles. But it may not be the revolution the likes of CCP and Crytek are expecting.

What the Leap Motion product (they only have one right now) does is allow you to control your computer with gestures. We're not talking about just jumping around, but "painting" on the screen with your fingers (or even chopsticks) with fine enough control that Autodesk and other drawing-orientd software vendors are working to make applications compatible with the Leap Motion Controller. And game developers? You bet! Lots of them -- and this is for a device that's not even supposed to start shipping until May 13. But, says CEO Michael Buckwald, they already have "hundreds of thousands of pre-orders," so it looks like they are developing a large market for developers (over 12,000 are in the Leap Motion developer program -- out of 50,000 who applied) so it's possible that Leap Motion could become a pretty big deal. (You can see the Leap Motion Controller in action at the end of the video.)

Walt Williams admits he's surprised the shooter made it to market
The writer behind Spec Ops has said that violent games are too easy from a creative perspective.
Walt Williams said he regretted the universal act of killing in many first-person shooters, during a panel at GDC in San Francisco, GameSpotreports. He said such actions have not only become mundane, but also mediocre and are at times just used as filler.
“We’re in an industry full of very intelligent, knowledgeable, and progressive people. It’s getting harder and harder for us to play these games and to look at them critically and say, 'This is OK.' This makes sense, especially as we get older,” said Williams. “I would like to see less violent games out there. Not because they're bad or wrong, but because I think creatively they're too easy.”
Williams’ session was about contextualising violence through narrative, using Spec Ops: The Line as an example.
"Honestly, the game was very much an experiment. One that, to this point, I'm kind of really surprised that it ever made it to the shelves," Williams said, explaining that it was remarkable that it ever came out at all.
The writer admitted he is unsure what it will take to life narrative in shooters, but suggested that creating more hopeful characters would be a positive start.

Between the Kinect and Leap Motion, gesture control's on just about everyone's minds these days. There's still a ways to go, certainly, before such devices become a mainstream method for interfacing with our PCs, but they've already become a ripe source of inspiration for the DIY community. Duo's hoping to further bridge the gap between the two, with a "the world's first 3d motion sensor that anyone can build." The desktop sensor features two PS3 Eye cameras that can track hands and objects for a more natural interface with one's computer. Duo's unsurprisingly looking to crowdfund its efforts. A pledge of $10 or more will get you early access to the company's SDK. For $40 you'll get the case and instruction. Add $30 to that number, and you've got yourself the kit, which includes everything but the camera ($110 will get you all that). Check out the company's plea after the break, and if you're so inclined you can pledge at the source link below.

PS4? Xbox Durango? Nope – VR headset Oculus Rift is the real next-generation of gaming, the company has claimed.
“Right from the very beginning of 3D games one of the goals has been to make a virtual reality, to make you feel like you’re actually present in the world,” Oculus Rift CEO and founder Palmer Luckey told VG247.
“That’s really what first-person games are meant to do. I think that virtual reality – it’s very clear that people want this. They see it and they say ‘This is something I want; I want to be in these worlds’.
“There’re other potential paths to next generation gaming, like people say ‘Mobile is the next generation’ or touch or social – but you don’t see people saying ‘Wow, all my life I’ve always wanted to play a social mobile casual streaming game with microtransactions’.
“But what they do say is, ‘I want to play a game in virtual reality’. And that’s why I think this is getting so much traction, and why it will really be a next generation gaming device.”
Luckey even went so far as to criticise Sony for taking the wrong direction with PS4.
“Maybe it’s the right path for them. I wouldn’t have gone down that path because I’m a VR enthusiast, I wanna make virtual reality happen,” he added.
“So in terms of have Sony gone down the wrong path in terms of my point of view as a VR enthusiast? Yeah, sure, but that’s because I’m a nut that loves VR so anything that’s not VR is going to be a mistake for me.”
