Mad Catz announced the F.R.E.Q. 7 gaming headset last week, and the company has the $200 cans on hand here at Mobile World Congress. As you may recall, the marquee spec is Dolby Pro Logic IIx processing, which expands 5.1-channel audio to 7.1 channels for a richer aural experience. Another cool feature: these over-ears come bundled with both a standard stereo connector and a cord with USB for connecting directly to your computer (both have mini-USB on one end). The F.R.E.Q. 7 wasn't plugged in so we can't speak to sound quality, but they feel lightweight, and the red color really pops in real life. (There's also a matte black option.) The devices are currently available for pre-order, but you can get a hands-on look now in our gallery.

Those of us have been dual booting Linux, Windows, and OS X operating systems for a while will be familiar with bootloaders such as GRUB and its ilk. Surprisingly, though, we haven’t seen a bootloader for the most popular computer of the last year – the Raspberry Pi. It makes sense to have a bootloader for the Raspberry Pi; with dozens of different distributions from Raspbian, Occidentalis, and a bunch of more esoteric distros, we’re surprised we’re only just now seeing a proper bootloader for the Raspi.
Berryboot is extremely simple to install – just copy it onto a FAT formatted SD card and you can install multiple OSes on your Raspberry Pi. On booting, Berryboot shows a dialog box of all the installed operating systems, with new ones able to be installed over the internet from a Berryboot menu.
You can grab Berryboot over on the gits. Berryboot also works with those Allwinner A10 single board computers, but the Hackaday tip line hasn’t seen hide nor hair of those boards.

Games jumped from $49.99 to $59.99 in the last generation - analysts discuss whether $70 will become the next standard for AAA titles
With the PlayStation 4 unveiled and rumors swirling that Microsoft is preparing to announce a new Xbox in April, next-gen is all the buzz right now. These are massive investments from the respective platform holders, and under the old "razor and blades" model the hope is to make back much of the money on software. And since some of that software is going to cost a good deal more to develop (although not as much as some think, says Hermen Hulst) should consumers be worried that $69.99 will become the new standard AAA game price?
GamesIndustry International posed that question to a few analysts. The consensus seems to be that $59.99 should be able to hold, but some big budget titles like Call of Duty and others could get away with higher.
"I think that games should be priced based on the value proposition, so some games should be priced higher, but I don't think the publishers have the collective will to charge more. My guess is that $59.99 will be the price point. I would applaud the publishers if they tried to charge $69.99, although gamers would probably get upset," said Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter.
"I would applaud the publishers if they tried to charge $69.99, although gamers would probably get upset"
Michael Pachter
Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton told AllThingsD that PS4 will support a variety of prices from $0.99 to the $60 range (of course, "range" could imply $69.99). But the bottom line is that in this digital era, a variety of content will lead to all kinds of pricing. And as EEDAR's Jesse Divnich pointed out to us, publishers can maintain the $59.99 price but bring in much more revenue with additional DLC.
"The $59.99 price point in the United States for next-generation games are unlikely to change. As we've seen through the years, however, revenue per game has increased gradually as publishers have been able to capitalize on additional in-game and digital content," he said. "With publishers focusing on fewer, yet bigger and longer lasting titles, I'd expect publishers to keep the $59.99 price point intact, but expand on their digital offerings with more in-game content and expansion packs."
He added, "And I don't think this is a scenario where publishers ship a 'base' product and gauge on digital offerings. We believe these digital offerings, like they are today, will expand upon the player experience and offer even more value than they do today."
David Cole of DFC Intelligence agrees. While he thinks the "super AAA" games may test out the $70 price, most content will come in much lower than that. "I think we will see an incredibly wide range of prices. Premium games command premium prices. Think Skylanders, Collector's editions, Guitar Hero and Wii Fit in their day. What gets squeezed is the stuff in the middle that must compete with high-end development on one hand and low cost/low price games on the other," he pointed out. "So you have fewer big budget titles but those will have even bigger budgets and that will be cost passed on to the consumer. Of course, very few games will be able to do this."
Even if there is a slight bump on AAA game pricing, the average selling price (ASP) will beging coming down as the cycle advances, according to IDC Research manager Lewis Ward.
"While there will always be collector's and limited edition console game discs that cost $80 or more, I'm not projecting that the PS4 or next-gen Xbox will raise the typical 'AAA' game disc to $70. 7th gen disc ASPs have trended down a couple dollars per year since 2006-2007. 8th generation discs will come in closer to $60 - which we're already seeing with Wii U - and then start trending down a few dollars per year. So there will probably be a ~$10 gap in pricing between 7th and 8th gen discs, but due to ASP slippage over time, the overall console discs ASP through 2016 should remain in the low to mid-$40s range," Ward explained.
An ASP in the mid-$40s is palatable for many hardcore gamers, but the console business is still going to have to face the fact that mobile, tablets, and free-to-play are changing the gaming landscape and the business of games. With PS4 supposedly being more open than any console before it, hopefully developers will being able to offer more free-to-play games and titles at more attractive prices.

It's a second week at the top of the Japanese software chart for Dragon Quest VII: Warriors of Eden, and while the sales might not be high as last week's 872,922, it's still over 10,500 ahead of its nearest rival, Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
- [3DS] Dragon Quest VII: Warriors of Eden - 184,993 (Total sales - 1,012,916)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 78,178 (2,591,602)
- [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 11,784 (1,922,492)
- [Wii] Taiko Drum Master Wii Super Wonderful Edition - 10,076 (396,225)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Best Price!) - 9,138 (227,235)
On the hardware chart all the consoles kept their places, with the Nintendo 3DS still reigning supreme, despite a slight drop in units sold. It'll be interesting to see if next week's chart shows any significant change in sales of the PS3, now that its successor has been announced.
- 3DS XL - 66,139 (Last week - 89,050)
- 3DS - 31,832 (38,645)
- PlayStation 3 - 16,934 (17,004)

Remember those times when developers would lash out at console transitions? It seems like a lifetime ago now.
And all Sony and Microsoft had to do to change their opinion was make them wait seven years before releasing a new console.
So delighted at the belated PS4 reveal is EA that EA Labels president Frank Gibeau has declared that “transition is our friend” and promised that the publisher will hit the ground running when the PS4 arrives later this year.
“Yesterday Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4, signalling that after seven years, gamers will be treated to a massive leap in technology, creativity and fun,” he wrote.
“For EA’s creative teams, this transition comes as no surprise. We’ve been investing and innovating on new technology for months. Console partners who have seen our early work agree, EA’s next-gen software is nothing short of astonishing.
“And every bit as impressive as the console initiative is the way our teams have pivoted to capture the mobile phenomenon. EA has established a clear leadership position on both the iOS and Android systems and we’ve set new standards for business models and gameplay.
“Console transitions are a complex and challenging experience. I’ve helped navigate several and agree with an old saying we have at EA: Transition is our friend. All the trend lines are converging to reward the creative and financial investments we have made in mobile and console technology.
“We have never been more ready or more excited about what comes next.”

Hi all, heres just a small bit of news concerning the network as a whole.
Recently we have condensed a lot of the smaller sites down to single sections over at www.dcemu.com, the Joypad news, DCEmu Interviews, DCEmu Console History, DCEmu Gadgets and Import Gaming, DCEmu Tutorials, Amazon releases and Ebay Releases and Daily Deals have all moved to single pages over at DCEmu.com.
I did move DCEmu reviews but its now been reinstated as 2 full sites again and we hope to see many new reviews.
The forums have been reduced massively and as you can see the news forums are now seperate from the discussion forums, this will hopefully please all those who hate news items on discussion forums and hopefully one day get the site buzzing again (it will). Theres still some work to do with descriptions but the basics are there.
My next project is the hardest and it involves a mountain of work, i was going to redirect and kill off all the subdomains but that would make it too hard to find news on the subject you want, So the plan is to make each forum go back to supporting one site, so the Wii/Wiiu News forum would be split into Wii News and WiiU News and so on, this way its easier to find news for the console you want to read about and for later years for homebrew etc etc.
Ive Split the Android news from the Apple forum today and theres lots more to do, over the next week or two all news forums will be split and sorted better. Thanks for your patience and time.

Mad Catz launched the F.R.E.Q. 5 gaming headset just over a year ago, and it's already skipping two model numbers ahead to the F.R.E.Q. 7. What justifies the out-of-order sequencing? The Dolby Pro Logic IIx processing, mostly. The pseudo-surround effect widens stereo and 5.1-channel signals to 7.1 channels for gamers who want the greater audio precision. Appropriately enough for its name, the F.R.E.Q. 7 also brings software-driven EQ to emphasize voice or music in computer games, as well as separate volume adjustment for chat and the main action. Pre-orders for the USB- and 3.5mm-friendly headset are available in red, white and two styles of black at $200, although you'll have to wait until the start of Mad Catz's fiscal 2014 -- after March, for non-accountants -- before it reaches your door.

Connecticut State Senator Toni Harp proposed a bill in January that would ban anyone younger than 18 from playing "violent point-and-shoot" video games in arcades or other public establishments. The bill defined "violent point-and-shoot" games as any entertainment device that used the "facsimile of a firearm as an essential component of play," which would include games such as House of the Dead, Area 51 and Duck Hunt.
The bill also called for research into the effects of violent video games on young minds, through a committee called the Violent Video Game Task Force within the Department of Children and Families. The task force would advise the Governor and General assembly on state programs that "may reduce the effects of violent video games on youth behavior," suggesting before the research was done that violent video games have an effect on children's actions.
The bill's Statement of Purpose offered a clear position on violent video games' impact on young minds, again presented before any research began: "To prevent minors from using violent point-and-shoot video games in public arcades and to create a task force to study the effects of violent video games on youth behavior."
This bill joined an influx of attention on video games in relation to real-world gun violence, following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Senator Harp's suggestions mimicked and magnifiedPresident Obama's proposal to research violent video games and enact other forms of potential gun-violence prevention.

William Volk may not be the world's oldest game designer, but he's up there. He started out as a play tester for Avalon Hill in 1979, and since then has worked for Activision and other major players in the game space. His current job is with PlayScreen, where he's working on their Word Carnivale iOS game, which is not violent at all. But over the years Volk has worked on slightly violent video games and has watched public outcries over video game violence since 1976. He's also tracked how much less violence we've seensince lead was removed from gasoline. (Editorial interjection: Aren't most remaining pockets of massive gun violence in cities where many poor kids grow up in apartments that have lead paint?) Due to technical problems during the interview, some of the conversation is missing, primarily about the recent spate of multiple murders. It seems, for instance, that Newtown shooter Adam Lanza was heavily into violent video games, which is sure to spark plenty of new discussion about how they affect players. But then again, as Volk reminded me in an email, "If people were influenced by video games, a majority of Facebook users would be farmers by now," a meme that has been floating around Facebook since last year, if not earlier.

US President says games can be a catalyst to inspire
President Obama has made a surprising move by endorsing video games during a recent .
The President said he was convinced to reconsider the attributes of video games, thanks to a meeting with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
He said the concept of vocational education got a bad reputation because of the perception it was pulling people into blue-collar jobs, but now he believes that those classifications have worn away.
“Look at Mark Zuckerberg. I was sitting next to him at dinner a couple of years ago, and he said he taught himself programming primarily because he was interested in games,” said Obama (transcription by VentureBeat).
“If we set programs in high schools that engage kids because they get it, they won’t be just sitting there slouching in back of rooms while someone is lecturing.

CCP and Crytek predict monetisation model will be core to the make up of future hardware
We’re days away from learning more about how the next generation of consoles will take shape – and developers predict free-to-play games will be at the heart of it.
The games industry has embraced the business model in the past few years, with publishing giants like EA and Ubisoft investing heavily in F2P titles.
And David Reid, monetisation manager at EVE Online and Dust 514 studio CCP, predicts that free-to-play games will be the dominant force by the end of the next console cycle.
“It’s hard to imagine the free-to-play transition slowing down any time soon – the model works so well for gamers,” Reid told MCV.
“As we steer towards the next generation of consoles, I’d expect to see a much larger array of triple-A titles available in the free-to-play model.

Microcomputer to offered to teachers to combat computing education crisis
A Raspberry Pi jam is to be held in Manchester in an effort to improve the computing knowledge of adults and children.
This first step is part of a long-term mission to bring coding to the classroom.
Raspberry Jam network founder and principle ICT teacher, Alan O’Donohoe has ben joined by Raspberry Pi distributor CPC Farnell to launch the UK’s first-ever Raspberry Jamboree in Manchester Central, UK, March 9th.
The Raspberry Jamboree will provide hands-on Raspberry Pi workshops to 350 teachers and educators. The sessions, with the low-cost, credit-card sized computer, aim to help educators develop the necessary skills needed to apply their knowledge to teach coding in the classroom – helping to fill the crisis in the current ICT curriculum, soon to be addressed by Michael Gove’s proposed coding-focused revisions.
The event will also provide a platform for this year’s interactive debate on the future direction of ICT in education and how innovations such as Raspberry Pi are driving change in the existing curriculum. It will be led by a panel including Professor Steve Furber (Principal Designer of BBC Micro), Pete Lomas (Raspberry Pi co-founder) and teachers, such as Carrie Anne Philbin.

via http://rpix86.patrickaalto.com/rblog.html
The last week was spent working on getting rpix86 to the same level as where ax86 currently is. I began the week by changing the CGA and EGA graphics blitting routines to also use the new OpenGL ES2 palette handling system. Since both the CGA and EGA (and also some Mode-X versions) use non-contiguous graphics memory organisation, I decided to still use a separate 256-color off-screen buffer which is then given to the glTexSubImage2D OpenGL routine as input. In the MCGA and SVGA 256-color modes I can use the emulated 0xA000 segment VRAM directly as input for the texture subimage routine, and I also added a system where I can build the texture from two subimages for cases where the Mode-X version uses a LineCounter to split the screen into two areas (like for example in my LineWars II game).
After the graphics modes were implemented I decided to add a screen capture system (so that I can add some pretty pictures to these blog posts, and also to have some screen copies on the Raspberry Pi Store when I eventually release rpix86 there). Here is the first screen capture I took, from the Norton Sysinfo CPU performance test page. The "80486, 53MHz" estimation is based on the division opcode speed, so it does not give a proper overall performance estimate. The performance bar is a better indicator as it actually runs various opcodes using a timer. The speed is around a 80386 40MHz machine, which translates to a 80486 20MHz machine. So not especially fast as my DS2x86 running on a MIPS processor at 396MHz is about as fast. I suspect the Linux operating system itself causes quite a performance hit (in addition to my having to emulate almost everything on a single CPU, while in DS2x86 I was able to divide the emulation chores between 3 separate CPUs).
After I got the screen capture working, I decided to redo my AdLib emulation to be a bit faster. In DSx86 my AdLib routine always calculates all the samples for all the 9 AdLib channels even when the channels are not active. This was not a problem in DSx86, as I used the otherwise idle ARM7 secondary processor to run this emulation. However in rpix86 and ax86 I need to use the main CPU also for the audio emulation, so it would be better to have it use as few CPU cycles as possible. I implemented a simple cycle counter to count the cycles spent in my AdLib emulation, and ran it first without any changes. I used the Silpheed game to test my changes, mainly just because it has pretty nice AdLib music. :-)
The original algorithm used 734.000 CPU cycles to mix and calculate 2048 samples for all 9 channels when no channel was playing audio, and up to 1.000.000 CPU cycles in Silpheed. Each channel consists of two "slots" which both produce a sample, but the first slot is usually used as a phase modulation for the second slot, instead of directly generating audio. So each sample for each slot takes about 27 CPU cycles to create. This number includes also the initial buffer clearing and all envelope and modulation handling, as I put my cycle counting routines around the whole AdLib emulation subroutine.
After some experimentation I found out a way to skip the channels that are not currently active. This is not quite as trivial as it sounds, as there is no "active" flag for the channels. If the virtual "key" (as in a piano key) is turned off, the sound will slowly fade based on the release envelope, so I can not just check whether a key is on and skip a channel if not. Also, if the slot is used as a phase modulation input for the second slot, turning this modulation off too early generates incorrect sound. I used a combination of key off, envelope phase and current volume to determine when it is safe to skip a slot. I managed to get the CPU usage down to 60.500 cycles when no channels are playing, and to around 470.000 cycles in Silpheed. It is not very common that all 18 slots are actually generating sound at any one time during a song, so this slot skipping will help the performance also during music playing.
The next step was to add mouse support, which turned out to be quite easy for rpix86. I haven't yet implemented this in ax86, where I need to use the touch screen system for mouse emulation. In rpix86 I can simply use the real mouse input. Next I will continue working on the still missing features, like floating point support, various graphics operations that are still missing, etc. Here below is a screen capture from Little Big Adventure which I just got working. There are still some small palette problems in it, which I will need to study more closely.

It's important to remember, especially in situations like this, that the existence of a patent does not necessarily correlate to the existence of a product, or even a company's desire to build what it has patented. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at Sony's ridiculously named PlayStation 3 tablet controller patent.
The device Sony refers to as an "EyePad" in its patent application, seen in the sketch above, would theoretically come equipped with the usual trappings you'd expect from a PS3 controller: D-Pad, buttons, analog stick, SIXAXIS motion sensors, etc. The more interesting bits, however, are a bit harder to pick out from the drawing.
First of all, those shaded stripes on the edge are not a creamy nougat center, as we had originally surmised, but rather illuminated strips of LEDs or comparable light source. This would allow the EyePad, in conjunction with an EyeToy camera, to function as a PlayStation Move controller.
Secondly, those dots on either corner of the apparent display (which could actually be a normal display, touchscreen or Vita-esque touchpad, according to the filing) are paired stereoscopic cameras. The cameras are arranged in such as way that their respective fields of vision provide a full, 360-degree view of any object placed onto the surface of the EyePad's screen, allowing for objects to be fully scanned in three dimensions and then rendered in game. Theoretically the player could also place their face within this field, allowing for face mapping in character customization applications, for instance.
Again, we doubt this patent represents anything more than a combination of day-dreaming and butt-covering on the parts of Sony's engineers and legal department, respectively, but the ideas presented here are definitely interesting.

It hasn’t been a week since Minecraft for the Raspberry Pi has been released, and already we’re seeing some cool builds that bridge our analog world with Minecraft voxel land. [Martin] got his hands on the Raspi version of Minecraft and decided to take advantage of the API Mojang threw into the build by making a huge analog block clock that keeps real world time in the Minecraft universe.
Basically, [Martin] created a small Python script that draws the face and hands of a clock in a Minecraft world. The Minecraft API comes with neat functions such as drawCircle, and drawLine, so making a real clock face is as simple as getting the system time and doing a bit of trig.
After the break you can check out [Martin]‘s Minecraft clock in action. If you’re running the Pi version of Minecraft, you can also get this running on your machine with the code on [Martin]‘s git.

The previously Kickstarter-funded games console has launched its pre-order page, powered by Amazon. You'll have to stump up the same $79 premium which nets you the sameGameStick that those crowd-funders are getting. Pre-orders will ship once those early orders are fulfilled. However, anyone ponying up today can expect theirs to arrive a good few months before the global retail launch later this year. You also order those dock and case peripherals, priced up at $25 and $10, respectively. Pick any color (as long as it's white) at the source.

Sources claim leaked photo is genuine, but probably not the finished product
A leaked photo of what looks like the progeny of a DualShock controller and a Cylon is purportedly an early prototype gamepad for the PlayStation 4.
The picture has leaked within a week of aFebruary 20th event in New York that most believe to be the unveiling of the next PlayStation console.
The photo, provided by Destructoid, shows a picture of a modified DualShock controller with what is probably a touch-screen on the front and a PlayStation Move sensor on the top.
The sides are more rounded than the current generation gamepad, and the analog sticks seem to borrow some from the PlayStation Vita.
There is also a speaker or microphone integrated into the device, an unidentified port on the bottom, and an unmarked button to the upper-left of the touchpad.
