 EA Sports has announced a group of new games coming to the next generation of consoles.First, they announced NBA Live 14, the first game in the series since its cancellation after NBA Live 10. The new game features technology BounceTech, which gives players greater control over basketball’s main mechanic, dribbling.Madden NFL 25 was also announced. Along with the expected visual upgrades, the newly introduced technologies include the movement improving True Step, the AI improvement Player Sense, and the improved defensive movement technology War in the Trenches. Adrian Peterson will adorn the game’s cover.Next up, FIFA 14. The biggest visual upgrade here comes in the form of crowd reactions, all enabled by the Ignite engine. EA Sports has improved both teammate AI to better predict upcoming plays as well as the way on-screen players move around the ball, giving movement with greater precision to the players.Finally, EA Sports announced UFC. The additions include MMAi system, a system that allows players to “organically” change their fighting style on the fly. UFC watches next spring.Each of the games is being developed in the EA Ignite engine.

Popcap launching third-person action title in Plants vs. Zombies franchise
The company that created Peggle has turned over a new leaf and is releasing a third-person action title based on the Plants vs. Zombies franchise.
PopCap's first entry into the multiplayer action arena is suitably adorable, but is a surprise lead for EA's E3 conference.
PopCap also announced Peggle 2.

New research shows that digital picked up where retail slumped

Consumers in the United States spent $3.5 billion on video games during the first quarter of 2013, according to a new NPD Group report. Of that total, $1.37 billion went to physical software purchases, $559 million was spent on used sales and rentals, and $1.49 billion was spent on digital purchases, includng subscriptions, mobile games, and downloadable content. The total revenue for video games was flat year-over-year, with the same $3.5 billion total in the first quarter of 2012.
"Digital spending fully offset the declines in physical format spend in Q1'13," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. "There is strong growth in full-game downloads and downloadable add-on content sales across consoles, PCs, and portables, up a combined 25 percent in the first quarter of this year."

In the title of his post [Donald Derek] calls this a Google TV you can build yourself. That’s certainly an over-reach. But the project is still a very impressive smart television built using a Raspberry Pi.
The open source project starts with the Rasbian OS, an RPi version of Debian Linux. Functionality is built up by installing Chromium to display webpages, a script to download YouTube videos, and OMXPlayer to play videos including 1080P HD content. The image above shows the smart phone controller for the system. This is provided by a Node.js configuration that manages communication between the remote and the RPi board.
On the one hand we love that this is open source. On the other, it’s not going to be able to tap into a lot of the content which makes a Google TV so valuable. For instance, you won’t be able to watch Netflix because that service doesn’t work on Linux systems. But you should be able to watch browser-based content like Hulu.

The US video games market has ceased its decline, according to the latest numbers from NPD.
Game Informer reports that $3.5bn was spent on game content in Q1 2013. That’s around the same as was reported in Q1 2012.
There is a difference, though. The physical games market has declined from $1.5bn in Q1 2012 to $1.37bn. The rental and pre-owned sector grew slightly from $1.38m to $1.59bn.
What has grown, however, is the digital sector. In Q1 2012 that was worth $525m. In Q1 2013 that reached $559m.
In Q1 2012 digital accounted for just over 40 per cent of the market. This year digital’s share stands at 55 per cent.

Most consumers know that when buying a new game they’ll get a good chunk of the cost back if they trade it in within two weeks.
Indeed, some retailers even offer discount deals where gamers need pay only 99p for a brand new release as long as the game is traded back in within 14 days.
And that’s precisely the reason why publishers may choose to exploit Microsoft’s new pre-owned control functionality to block the trading in of new titles for a period after the game is released.
“Many believe that used games sold in proximity to a new game’s release cannibalises sales of the new title (we believe this is probably true),” he said in an investor note.
“So we think that some publishers may limit used game trade-ins for a specified period of time following the game’s launch.”
However, Pachter doesn’t foresee any publishers introducing a simple blanket ban on all their releases.
"In our view, any publisher that disables used gaming risks a backlash or boycott of its titles by gamers, negatively impacting sales," he added.

"Interesting behind the scenes interview with the creator of Paper Sorcerer, the stunning hand drawn RPG video gamethat was successfully Kickstarted last year and is now nearing launch. Jesse Gallagher, the artist single-handedly creating the game in Unity, has painstakingly drawn out each character and environment across all 50 dungeons. He estimates he's gone through at least 600 pages of drawings in his notebooks in the process, and had to scan them all in — but he says it's worth it to give artists more control over the games they work on. 'I was disappointed with how little input the artists had into the overall game design, so I decided to go the solo dev route,' he says. 'Now I'd like to just continue making indie games until I fall over dead at the keyboard.'"

VR technology is coming along leaps and bounds, quite literally, as the Omnidirectional gaming treadmill has reached its funding target.
One of the hottest crowdfunded gaming devices of the year so far, Virtuix's Omni treadmill is the next step towards virtual reality gaming, as it combines with the Oculus Rift headset in order to offer an entirely immersive experience.
Players are able to use the device to track their movement and direction, which when combined with the 360-degree motion-tracking of the Oculus Rift, allows players to control their movement in game, well, with their actually movement.
Virtuix listed the Omni on Kickstarter with an initial target of $150,000 but after videos of the device went viral on the web, gamers have jump at the chance to help fund the device.
As a result, the device has now received over $600,000 of funding in just 48 hours.
Those looking to get their hands on the Omni can do so for as low as $250, with packages including the device and all the necessary equipment (platform, shoes, belt, software) are available for $429.
Virtuix maintains that the Omni is set to enter production late December, with the device shipping in January 2014.

Unreal Engine 4 now supports the Oculus Rift VR headset, Epic Games announced this morning. The move comes as part of an "Integrated Partners Program," which also adds support from a variety of other middleware companies (Autodesk, IDV, and NVIDIA to name just a few). Licensees have access to the entire list of middleware software, and can implement functionality in their UE4-powered projects starting today. Epic Games VP Mark Rein told us at GDC 2013 that Unreal Engine 4 support for Oculus Rift was in the works, but we didn't think it'd arrive this soon!

All three platform holders are ready for what they hope will be their biggest and most important E3s to-date.
Microsoft will go all-out to reveal games for Xbox One at the show, in a bid to answer criticism about its console's focus on non-games functionality. It won’t just be Xbox One on the show floor, however, with Xbox 360 also set to feature.
Sony, meanwhile, will reveal the look of PS4, show off new titles including Destiny, and reveal plans to revitalise sales of Vita.
Finally, Nintendo may not have a big press conference this year, but E3 2013 marks one of its most impressive console line-ups. A new 3D Mario game, Zelda: Wind Waker, Mario Kart and Smash Brothers are amongst the games set to be revealed.
Microsoft’s retail, sales and marketing director Jon Grimes said: “As a milestone year for the Xbox brand, we’re thrilled to reveal our gaming portfolio in LA next week. Gamers should expect to see a new generation of gaming experiences on Xbox One, as well as great content for Xbox 360."
"We're looking forward to revealing more on PlayStation 4, and giving gamers a taste of the incredible line up of software that our own, and third party development studios have been working on," said Sony UK boss Fergal Gara.
"With Beyond, Gran Turismo 6, Tearaway, Killzone Shadow Fall and Drive Club on the horizon, there's never been a better time to own or buy a PlayStation console and we look forward to welcoming everyone, whether that be in person or via live-stream, to our press conference and stand at E3."
And finally, Nintendo UK marketing boss Shelly Pearce added: “E3 this year is all about first hand gameplay for Nintendo and we're looking forward to giving people the chance to get hands on with our upcoming software titles.”

A failure to keep pace with changes to the international games market has hit the Japanese games industry hardest.
That’s according to a new report on the Japanese industry in weekly trade magazine Famitsu, as translated byPolygon.
"This quarter featured tough earnings reports for companies overall," SMBC Nikko Securities senior analyst Eiji Maeda states. "One reason for that is the shrinking market for packaged software and the way that new, big-budget IP is failing to sell across the board.
“Also, downloadable content sales are booming in the US and Europe and publishers are taking advantage of that for their bottom line, but Japanese makers have lagged behind, which is key."
"Like the previous one, this past year's reports show a game industry in a transition period, which hits the first parties the worst.”
Despite this the Japanese market grew 1.2 per cent in the year ending March 31st.

An entire generation will miss out if it doesn't, the Eidos life president claims
Nintendo should bring its intellectual property to all platforms to ensure new generations have the opportunity to experience its unique titles, Ian Livingstone has said.
The life president of Eidos devoted his opening briefing at the Bristol Games Hub to offering advice to aspiring as well as accomplished developers, as Pocket Gamer reports.
“Nintendo should have their IP on every platform,” Livingstone said, who argued that reinforcing IP should take precedence over the health of the publisher’s platforms.
“Otherwise a whole generation of young people will miss out on their games.”
Consumers, especially those who aren’t dedicated gamers, are now spending more money on smartphone and tablet games. But despite their huge appeal, Nintendo has resisted being involved whatsoever.

Those with deeper pockets can opt to get the full kit (including belt, tracking hardware and software) from $399, or go all out and get the Omni Rack (for holding your Rift control box, favorite beverage etc) and some exclusive merch on top for $539. Really dig this thing? Then why not lay down $7,999 for a custom design made from wood and steel? Those of you who are still undecided can delve into the project a little further (at the source), but it seems likely that the final retail price could be somewhat higher than that offered to Kickstarter backers so, you know, you might not want to hang around too long.

Google has committed to pushing software updates to its Glass headset each month, and a post on Google+ reveals this month' tweaks are focusing on pictures. If you're a fan of using the device for POV shots, it should take better pictures by capturing a sequence of images for improved low-light performance and HDR pictures in bright situations. Also new is a prompt to add a caption after you take a picture.

It’s not his first Internet radio, but [Matthias]‘ modernization of a classic Bakelite radio is a real, functional piece of art. Not only does it retain the look of an old radio, it also has the capability to listen to streams and his entire MP3 collection through the Internet.
For the software, [Matthias] used jquery to pull down web radio streams and soon figured out how to play all his MP3s through Google Music. This, and a web-based remote for his mobile device, allows the new old-school Internet radio to play everything [Matthias] would ever want to listen to.

 It wasn't too long ago that Sony kind of introduced us to its inaugural Laser Light Source Projector with 3LCD technology, but now it's time for the company to let us know a little more about the device. For starters, Sony's officially dubbing it VPL-FHZ55, and it's also emphasizing that it's indeed the world's first laser projector to be powered by 3LCD imaging tech. Just as we'd heard back in January, the lamp-less VPL-FHZ55 can deliver 4,000 lumens of color light at a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,200, which Sony says should be more than enough steam to "deliver bright and vivid color reproduction." The VPL-FHZ55 is expected to be available later this August, however there's no word on how much you'll have to spend to add one of these to your setup. But, while we wait for those details to come to light, perhaps you'd be interested in perusing the gallery below.
