We’ve seen some of [Connor]‘s work before, and it looks like he’s now turning to product design. He’s come up with an adapter for the Raspberry Pi to control a few wireless wall socket relays, allowing anyone with a Pi to control lights, coffee makers, TVs, and anything else that falls under the very broad home automation banner.
The system uses a 315MHz radio breakout board for a Raspberry Pi to control the relays in one of three wall socket adapters. There’s a script running on the Pi with a very nice GUI to turn the lights on and off.
[Connor]‘s product is extremely similar to a certain WiFi-enabled wall-plug relay system controlled by a smartphone, and to that end, he’s decided to call his device the Belchin’ Emo Switch. The name might need work, but he’s selling three Raspberry Pi-controlled wall plugs for the same price of one wall plug from Brand A.
Below you’ll find [Connor]‘s videos for his device. You can also check out this reddit thread where he shows off just how open source he can be; there are part suppliers and even how he’s packaging this system for shipment.

Activision is closing its premium Call of Duty: Elite service, nearly two years after it racked up more than 10 million registered users and 2 million paid subscribers. The service that provides in-depth stats, social networking, and clan-based features for Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2 officially ceases to be on Friday, February 28 at 10AM PT/1PM ET.
Despite that healthy subscription base - a year's membership cost $50 when Elite launched in 2011 - Activision made its services free alongside the launch of Black Ops 2 in 2012. The publisher then brought many of Elite's features forward to the companion app released for Call of Duty: Ghosts, and it's now encouraging users to download that app, perchance for future Duties such asthe one in development at Sledgehammer Games.
Activision has a FAQ detailing what this all means in greater detail. As a means of thanks to those who used the service, the publisher is doling out two hours of Double XP in Ghosts to members who've logged into Elite since January 1, 2014. It's an altogether subdued end to a service that was trumpeted as "Activision getting in front of our players and leading them into the future of connected entertainment."

The new Oculus prototype has a better screen, reduced latency and improved movement tracking.
Eighteen months have elapsed since Oculus VR was founded, and in that time the company has been backed to ten times its $250,000 Kickstarter target, gathered $75 million in investment funds, and shipped the first development kits of its Oculus Rift headset to its backers. “If someone is going to do virtual reality, they should do it right or not do it at all,” Rift creator Palmer Luckey says, and his new Crystal Cove prototype is the closest VR has come to being faultlessly right. The public has been watching Rift the whole way through its gestation, from when it was an unnamed prototype built by Luckey in his house through to its appearance at January’s Consumer Electronics Show, where Oculus VR stole the limelight with the first glimpse of its newest prototype. It’s a device designed to answer the question that everyone has been asking during the journey: can virtual reality be done properly?“Virtual reality is the first platform where if you do it badly, you won’t just not have fun, you’ll actually make people feel bad,” Luckey says. “If one company puts out a bad VR experience, it reflects on the entire industry and it could potentially scare people off.” For Oculus VR and its investors, that means the stakes are high.Part of the concern is that the first Rift development kits left plenty to the imagination. Rift was clearly still an extraordinary piece of technology, one that made it seem like virtual reality might finally be practical, but a few final kinks needed to be resolved before it was ready for market. Those kinks included its latency, a low-resolution display and head tracking that was limited to three different movements. Those problems combined made a significant number of players feel nauseous while using Rift.Crystal Cove tackles these problems by swapping the devkit’s screen for a low-persistence OLED replacement, reducing latency, and tracking lateral movements using high-precision position-tracking technology. Together these tweaks represent a tremendous leap forward for the headset.

February 25th, 2014, 23:49 Posted By: wraggster
EA COO Peter Moore is betting on a dominating role for digital revenue in video games. Speaking at the Digital Entertainment World conference, Moore said (via GI.biz) he expects digital sales to fully eclipse retail numbers in two years.
He likened the rising prominence of downloads as a type of "creative destruction," in which an industry is unable to regulate the evolving purchasing habits of its consumers. Moore compared the scenario to the music industry, which he says is still recovering from its shift away from relying primarily on physical disc sales for revenue to a more download-centric model.
Moore relates that EA's "customers" used to be retailers but, in the global always-online environment of the modern era, those "customers" are now the players. This has caused EA to triple its customer service operations over the last five years and even affected the company's marketing efforts – TV advertising spend is down and online and social advertising is up. Social media is more important than ever to EA.
EA just reported third-quarter earnings for its fiscal 2014. While the massive games publisher suffered an overall net loss of $308 million during the period, digital sales accounted for over half of all earnings. EA attributed this big upswing to a 60 percent increase in transactions in EA's lineup of collectible card-based simulations, FIFA Ultimate Team, Madden NFL Ultimate Team and NHL Ultimate Team.

Samsung's new Gear smartwatches are no longer card-carrying members of its Android Galaxy. That's because Tizen, the company's open-sourced OS, has taken over the reins for the line begot by the barely five-month-old Galaxy Gear. And, in typical Samsung fashion, the company hasn't released just one new Gear, but three with very specific areas of focus: the fashionable Gear 2, the functional Gear Neo and fitness-focused Gear Fit. The newly announced trio was on display here atMobile World Congress in Barcelona, giving us a chance to get acquainted with their particular quirks and let you know whether or not to free up some space on your wrist.

Apple has fallen twelve places in the annual Consumer Superbrands survey of ‘cool’ brands.
The iPhone, iPad and Mac maker was voted second in 2013in the survey, which is compiled from the votes of an ‘Expert Council’ of 34 industry figures and 3,000 British adults based on brand awareness.
This year, Apple came 14th – eight places behind rival tech giant Microsoft, which came sixth – the highest place for any tech firm.
Microsoft also came ahead of Google, which was placed one position lower in seventh.
Top of the ‘superbrands’ for consumers was British Airways, followed by Rolex, Coca-Cola, the BBC and Heinz.
Besides Microsoft, Apple and Google, the only other technology firm to make the top 20 was Sony, achieving 17th place.
Apple’s other primary rival, Samsung, didn’t appear in the top 20.
PC World was voted the category winner for electronics retailers, with Amazon.co.uk top of entertainment and gifts retailers.
In the separate Business Superbrands survey – based on B2B awareness – Apple came third, behind Visa and Google. Microsoft came sixth, one place behind consumer favourite BA.
Stephen Cheliotis, chairman of the Superbrands council, commented: "Apple and the other tech giants have suffered, with Apple particularly struggling to meet arguably unrealistic high expectations.”
"It is increasingly clear that in the short-term at least, Apple is struggling to maintain its enviable innovation record in the eyes of consumers while failing to inspire individuals without its hugely influential leader, the late Steve Jobs."

Android powered connected device also works with iOS, and injects a bit of class into wearable tech.
Tailored device manufacturer, Creoir Ltd, has debuted the Ibis smartwatch which pairs wearable technology with the latest style trends.
Gartner recently revealed that smart watches have not been more accepted by consumers due to them lacking in an innovative design, with consumers saying they are cumbersome and bulky.
The Ibis smartwatch is powered by a lower powered optimised Android platform and a custom user interface, and is operable across iOS as well as Android.
It is wi-fi, Bluetooth and USB enabled, and features an accelerometre, e-compass plus an ambient light sensor and can be remote controlled by a smartphone which delivers notifications to the small touchscreen.
Pekka Väyrynen, CEO of Creoir Ltd, said: “We believe the demand for smartwatches will be driven by fashion and sport brands, and the Ibisexemplifies the type of product that we create for fashion brands.
“Every brand has its own design language, so with each client we start from scratch to develop a product that specifically matches the brand and their audience. With our expertise, we can provide consumer brand owners with everything they need to have a real advantage when entering the smart device space.”
Check out Creoir’s promo video for the Ibis below.

The only other major launch was Rambo: The Video Game - which found its feet in 21st.The Lego Movie Videogame was again top of the chart, and its sales actually rose this week - half-term week - when its big screen brother was top of the UK film chart.FIFA 14 was second, Call of Duty: Ghosts third, Battlefield 4 fourth and Lego Marvel Superheroes was fifth. It was another great week for Lego games overall - five Lego titles charted last week, but a total of nine made the top 40 here, including Lego Star Wars, Lego Lord of the Rings, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean and both Lego Batman titles.

First off, sorry for my lack of blog updates for the recent weeks. I have not had time to work on rpix86 for a few weeks now, as I have been busy working on stuff relating to my license agreement with Retro Infinity. I am currently porting my x86 emulation core to a new platform, but this work falls under a NDA so I can not tell you more about it. This work has a deadline, and I prefer to get all stuff that has a deadline done sooner rather than later. Thus, rpix86 is on hold until this work is done.
I can however tell you about one enhancement that will be in the next version of rpix86. I will add a simple CD-ROM support to the next version. This means that you can give a second file folder parameter to rpix86, and this will be used as a D: drive and will show up as a CD-ROM to the DOS programs. This will allow you to run some programs that expect the CD to be present, and will also help installing some DOS programs distributed on a CD. This is also a small step towards ISO image support, which I hope to eventually have in rpix86.
In any case, thanks again for your continued interest in rpix86, and I hope to be able to get back to working on it within a few weeks or so.

Best known for its range of console and PC gaming accessories, Mad Catz has made huge strides over the past year to cater for mobile gamers. After it launched its M.O.J.O. Android gaming console in June, the peripheral maker has emerged atMobile World Congress with C.T.R.L.i, its first controller to feature native support for iOS 7. While it's still in the prototype stage (so new, we're amongst the first to see it), the C.T.R.L.i is was fully playable when we discussed specifics with Mad Catz's representative, allowing us to experience an almost final version of the gamepad before it launches publicly in April.

Before the days of iPod docks in every conceivable piece of audio equipment, most devices were actually built very well. Most shelf top equipment usually came with well designed circuits using quality components, and late 90s CD players were no exception. [Mariosis] heard of some very nice DACs found in some of these units and decided to take one out for a spin. He’s using a Raspberry Pi to play audio with the DAC found in a late 90s Kenwood CD player.
After fortune favored a CD player with a dead drive on [Mariosis]‘ workbench, he dug up the service manual and found some interesting chips – a PCM56 DAC, a little bit of logic, and an SM5807 oversampling chip that does all the conversion for the DAC.
This oversampling chip uses an I2S – not I2C – bus to carry the data from the CD to the DAC. There is, of course, an I2S driver for the Raspi, but the first attempts at playing audio didn’t result in anything. It turned out there was a problem with what the oversampler expected – the ‘standard’ I2S signal delays the data one tick behind the LRCLK signal.
There are two ways to fix this problem: programming a kernel driver, or building some custom logic to fix the problem. Obviously breaking out some flip-flops and NOR gates was the cooler option, giving [Mariosis] a great sounding stereo with a vintage DAC.

Curious about game development? YoYo Games is offering free licenses for GameMaker: Studio, development software that caters to users who don't know the depths of programming. Until March 2, licenses for the Standard edition can also be upgraded to the Professional version for $35.
Never heard of GameMaker? Derek Yu used it to develop the punishing labyrinth of Spelunky, while Risk of Rain developer Hopoo Games used it to build giant pig-infested stages. Messhof also used GameMaker for its multiplayer stab-fest, Nidhogg.
If you're interested, download the Standard version and play around with it. If you decide it's not for you, the only thing it will really cost you is time.

Gearbox Software filed a lawsuit against 3D Realms (3DR) and Interceptor Entertainment, accusing the studios of unauthorized use of the Duke Nukem property and alleging violation of trademarks held by Gearbox. The lawsuit points to 3D Realms' recent reveal of Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, which features a teaser site with a timer counting down to February 25.
"Apparently, after selling its Duke Nukem IP rights to Gearbox in 2010, 3DR sought to privately convince others that the sale never happened," thecomplaint reads. "The result is the unauthorized development effort that reportedly exists between 3DR and Interceptor."
Among the documents filed in the suit is a breach statement issued by Gearbox stating that 3D Realms infringed on Gearbox's intellectual property in addition to a statement signed by 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller and Duke Nukem co-creator George Broussard that acknowledged the infringement. In a statement filed to Joystiq, Gearbox Software said, "As the filing shows, 3DR's wrongdoing is both admitted and unfortunate for everyone who cares about Duke Nukem."
3D Realms filed a lawsuit against Gearbox in June 2013 for alleged unpaid royalties for Duke Nukem Forever, and later issued a public apology and withdrawal of the lawsuit in September 2013. Gearbox took over the development of the game in September 2010 in addition to acquiring the rightsto the brand from 3D Realms.

What happens when you cross Being John Malkovich with NES classic The Legend of Zelda? You get the terrifying Oculus Rift demo seen in video below the break. The mod is currently just the game's overworld and its first dungeon, but there are plans to scale up the whole game to VR playability by March of this year (yes, for free -- this is Nintendo's property, after all). Should you already have an Oculus headset and a strong constitution, the demo's available right here.

Angry Birds creators Rovio says it is crucial that parents are made aware of the costs in free-to-play games.
The firm’s comments come after an OFT investigation, which found that developers and platform holders must ensure users – particularly parents and children – are made aware of in-game costs.
Rovio launched a major free-to-play kids mobile game late last year in Angry Birds Go. But the studio says it is already making parents aware of its in-app purchases.
“The only way to do free-to-play is ethically. Accidental purchases benefit no-one,” said Jami Laes, EVP of Games at Rovio Entertainment.
“This is a matter we take seriously. We want our games to be safe and fun for people of all ages. We strive to make parents aware of in-app costs and to use the safeguards the different mobile and payment platforms have.”
