Oculus VR has a new headset. CEO Brendan Iribe showed the prototype, dubbed Crescent Bay, off today at the first Oculus Connect conference. It has built-in audio, it's lighter and packs 360-degree motion tracking. Iribe says that the jump between the new prototype and the previous developer kit (DK) is as dramatic as the jump between DK1 and therecently shipped DK2. Of course, it has a higher resolution screen and refresh rate, but the focus on this version though, seems to be audio. The headset sports onboard headphones that apparently can be removed if you'd rather use your own, and custom audio software (with help from the University of Maryland's RealSpace3D tech) to make "presence" much more convincing. "We're working on audio as aggressively as we're working on the vision side," Iribe said. Which makes sense, considering that sound is at least half of the experience for most entertainment.

When we saw the Samsung Gear VR at IFA, Oculus CTO John Carmack showed us a basic version of an app store made for mobile virtual reality. But when the headset ships to consumers sometime later this year, the VR outfit has bigger plans. It's rebranding the current Oculus Share "store" into Oculus Platform and turning it into a launcher of sorts for apps and other experiences, as noticed by TechCrunch. Platform will act as common store across the firm's entire platform including the Rift and mobile. Like the prototype from earlier this month, the store will exist within virtual reality and will house games, apps and stuff like the virtual movie theater, Oculus Cinema.

Presence. It's the ability of VR headsets to fool your mind and body into thinking that you are actually in a virtual world, and that experience is what Oculus seeks to deliver with its latest prototype. Code-named Crescent Bay, it's an evolution of the DK2 headset that only recently started making its way into the hands of developers. I got to try out the new hardware today at Oculus Connect, the company's inaugural developer conference. Come live vicariously through me, dear reader, as I tell you how it went.

If you've ever wanted to modify a virtual reality headset (or even create one from scratch), Oculus VR just gave you a big head start on your project. The Facebook-owned firm hasopened up the code, mechanical elements and design for its first VR wearable, the Oculus Rift DK1. Provided you have the know-how and tools, you can now build upon everything Oculus learned in its early days about screens, head tracking and ergonomics. The source material won't help you recreate the more advanced technology of newer Rift kits or theGear VR, but it should be worth a look if you're curious about the inner workings of immersive displays.

As Sony's smartphone division continues to struggle, the company is working out what it needs to return to profitability. Does it concentrate on the high-end market dominated by Apple and Samsung, or does it try to appeal to customers looking to get their very first smartphone? One thing you might not expect is for the company to push forward with the release its own smart eyewear, a Google Glass clone of sorts, that connects to its devices to superimpose images, videos and text into the wearers view. "SmartEyeglass," as it's known, looks like a bulky pair of 3D glasses that have been modified to include a 3-megapixel camera, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, brightness sensor, a microphone and a pretty large battery pack.

Privacy. Sometimes we all crave a little. "Bocchi tent" is a 1.3 x 1.3-meter, soft-cornered cube that maker Bibi Lab reckons offers the "ultimate gaming space." With a slender gossamer wall between you and the rest of humanity, there's a degree of sensorial blockage, but we could, obviously, still hear the din of the Tokyo Game Show floors -- headphones will be necessary if you're looking to block out Other People. (The computer inside didn't even have any games! What a waste.)
With all the space-age science of a pop-up tent, open up the storage pouch and the temporary gaming den makes itself -- you'll just have to add the furniture (and well, gaming hardware), yourself. The tent is set to retail for 5,000 yen in Japan -- and if you're particularly taken with the idea of your own flatpack Internet Cafe, at least it should fit in your suitcase.

Gaming accessory manufacturer PDP is working on new gamepads designed specifically for Mortal Kombat X, and the company showed off designs for Xbox One and PS4 at GameStop Expo last week. Iron Galaxy Community Manager Alex Jebailey snapped some photos of the gamepads and posted them on Instagram.
The controllers displayed at the conference featured six big buttons on the stumpy right side of the gamepad – A, B, X, Y, LB and RB for Xbox One – and a directional stick on the left side. It's not an analog stick, PDP told IGN. "The stick that you see is actually a series of micro-switches as well (just like the buttons), not an analog stick. It helps to bring the player closer to the classic arcade feel."
PDP clarified that the gamepads shown at GameStop Expo were not final products. "The Mortal Kombat X controller that we showed at the GameStop Expo is still in development, so platforms have not been finalized," PDP said. "We like to work with the manufacturers to get a licensed product when possible. The controllers are designed along the lines of our VS Fight Pads which came out for the Xbox 360 and PS3 a few years back."
Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14, 2015, for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

Unsurprisingly for the biggest ever launch of a new gaming IP, Activision and Bungie's Destiny has swooped into the top spot in the UK retail charts, with 46 per cent of customers buying the PS4 sku of the game. 36 per cent bought on Xbox One, 14 per cent on Xbox 360 and just four per cent on PS3.
Last week's number one, The Sims 4, holds second place, with Watch Dogs in third. NHL 15 and the generously titled Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution also make top ten appearances. NHL at seventh and Naruto at number ten.

Got a little too much money and an abundance of gaming gadgetry on your hands? Here's a weekend project that may be right up your alley. As demonstrated by KatsuKity, the makers of a 3DS capture card, you can rig up a way to play your favorite games on an Oculus Rift complete with those rad stereoscopic 3D effects (assuming the game in question actually has them). It's actually pretty simple once everything's hooked up -- KatsuKity's viewer software has been updated with support for the DK2, so once your tiny console is sending 3D video to your PC, you shouldn't have much trouble running that into your Rift. As for how you get that capture card up and running in the first place... well, that's another story entirely. You can either buy a a capture board and shoehorn it into your 3DS yourself, or take the easy way out and purchase a pre-modded unit. It's a pretty proposition either way, but it may just be a small price to pay to catch a few glimpses ofSuper Smash Brothers in three dimensions.

The Broadcom SOC in the Raspberry Pi is actually surprisingly powerful, it turns out. It’s actually capable of driving a VGA monitor through the GPIO pins using a handful of resistors.
[Gert van Loo], Raspberry Pi chip architect, wizard, and creator of a number of interesting expansion boards showed off a VGA adapter for the new B+ model at the recent Raspberry Pi Jam in Cambridge this week. Apparently, there is a parallel interface on the SoC that can be used to drive VGA with hardware using a resistor ladder DAC. That’s native VGA at 1080p at 60 fps in addition to HDMI for the Raspberry Pi. Only the new Model B+ has enough pins to do this, but it’s an intriguing little board.
The prospect of having two displays for a Raspberry Pi is very interesting, and the remaining four GPIOs available mean a touch screen could be added to one display, effectively making a gigantic Nintendo DS. Of course there are more practical problems a dual display Raspi solves, like driving a projector for the current crop of DSP/resin 3D printers, while still allowing for a usable interface during a print.
The VGA expansion board, “is likely to have issues with EMC,” which means this probably won’t be a product. Getting a PCB made and soldering SMD resistors isn’t that hard, though, and we’ll post an update when the board files are released.
Thanks [Uhrheber] for sending this one in.

British bookmaker William Hill has revealed its odds on favourite for the Christmas number one and it's FIFA 15.
"Destiny is no doubt going straight to the top of the charts this week but its sales look likely to tail off to make way for FIFA come Christmas," explained William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.
Destiny takes second place and Assassin's Creed: Unity is just behind that.
- FIFA 15 - 1/4
- Destiny - 7/2
- Assassin's Creed: Unity - 7/1
- Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris - 9/1
- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel - 9/1
- Lego Batman 3 - 16/1
- F1 2014 - 16/1
FIFA 14 is always a massive seller at Christmas and FIFA 14 secured the festive number one last year. Christmas 2012 saw Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 take the honour.
William Hill's original list included Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain but this was revised when they realised it wasn't due for release until next year.

September 13th, 2014, 21:57 Posted By: wraggster
The NPD Group's results for August are here and the new consoles remained the stars of the show, making up almost 70 per cent of hardware sales for the month.
"Overall new physical retail sales (hardware, software, and accessories) increased by 8 in August 2014 over August 2013 and followed a similar pattern of prior months with explosive hardware growth driven by eighth generation consoles offsetting declines in software," commented The NPD Group's Liam Callahan.
"When lining up sales of PS4 and Xbox One after ten months on the market, the combined PS4 and Xbox One hardware sales are greater by over 70 per cent compared to their predecessors."
August's bestselling title was Madden NFL 15 with consumers opting for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.
"New launches in August 2014 declined 41 per cent compared to new launch performance in August 2013 due to poor comparisons to August 2013 launches like Saints Row IV, Disney Infinity, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Eight out of the top ten games in August were new launches compared to only 3 in August 2014," said Callahan.
"Deep declines in seventh generation software of 57 per cent were not offset by growth in eighth generation software, leading to a net decrease of console software sales of $47 million."
In accessories sales declined slightly compared to August 2013 but this can be explained with last year's release of Disney Infinity and its accompanying figurines.
PlayStation was keen to share its place in the NPD results, pointing out that the PS4 was number one in hardware sales for the eighth consecutive month and that the majority of Madden NFL 15 purchasers opted for the PS4 version.

A consumer-ready Occulus Rift will be given a limited release next year, according to a report by TechRadar.
It will follow a similar stategy to the rollout of Google Glass, with a 'public beta' intended to gauge consumer and retailer reaction prior to a full launch.
Citing "multiple sources with knowledge of the matter", TechRadar reported that the release is planned for April 2015, but may end up being pushed back into the summer.
Speaking to Eurogamer earlier this month, Occulus VR co-founder Nate Mitchell said that the aim was for the consumer version to be "as cheap as possible", in the range of $200-400.
He explained that a commercial headset would need to be significantly smaller and lighter than the current dev kit, and be "super-polished and easy to use by anyone".
The Occulus Rift may face significant competition on release, with VR now being developed by Samsung, Valve and Sony.
An Oculus representative declined to comment on the report.

New York City is a town of names: Rockefeller, Astor, Trump. Legacies of the vast wealth held by dynastic families in early 20th century New York City. America's college campuses are littered with the same convention; wealthy alumni donate large sums to expand a university, and subsequently name that expansion after themselves. The University of Maryland, for instance, is getting a $35 million computer science wing from two of Oculus VR's co-founders. And what's it named? "The Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Innovation," apparently, after Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe. Oculus chief software architect (and co-founder) Michael Antonov is footing another $4 million.
The new facility is planned to "feature state-of-the-art maker spaces," says UMD's Jayanth Banavar. Iribe describes it as, "designed for hackers, makers and engineers, which will help give rise to future breakthroughs, products and startups that will transform the way we live and interact with the world around us." More bluntly, the space is being built to educate the next generation of virtual reality and other future computing platforms. "This gift positions Maryland to be one of the leading institutions for virtual reality in the world," Iribe says.
